I'm not being flippant.
I challenged you to disprove me about Yamamato not saying what ParsedOut quoted. You couldn't.

That would be true if you weren't trolling. You aren't challenging anyone. You are just stoking a fire with flippant commentary.

It isn't trolling to challenge someone's thinking. Some guys just get all pissy when you challenge the groupthink on gun ownership up in here.Leave a comment:

Yeah Enihorn and a I almost never really agree, either you just have to learn to basically ignore him unless you just want have a troll Vs troll thread lolFair enough, however, I disagree with Finklestein's discussion tactics. The erroneous attribution of the quote is somehow designed to render the quote moot.
The quote originated in the movie "Tora Tora Tora" and you are correct, it is likely a composite of his feelings about the US and what he knew about the country.
Regardless, trying to end discussion over assigning a person to the quote is just a misdirection of the discussion.
..
The Tora Tora Tora quote your thinking of is
"I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."
A nice dumbing down and summery of his thoughts from Hollywood for stupid Americans
This is the basis for that quote.
A military man can scarcely pride himself on having "smitten a sleeping enemy"; it is more a matter of shame, simply, for the one smitten. I would rather you made your appraisal after seeing what the enemy does, since it is certain that, angered and outraged, he will soon launch a determined counterattack. - Isoroku YamamotoLeave a comment:

Do you even know where India is?
Running from what? I said it was a good quote - it simply had no bearing on the discussion.Leave a comment:

I wasn't trying to end any discussion. You can't discuss something that was never said.

Its a nice quote but there is NO historical evidence that Yamamoto actually said anywhere on the record. Its generally attributed to him due to his other quotes on the subject of war with the US and the fact that he knew US culture very well. He lived, studied and toured the states for 5 years IIRC in the years leading up to the war, he knew what our capabilities were from a economic and resource stand point and the type of culture we had. Is it likely that he said something similar in confidence or behind closed doors, yes its likely but there is no proof that he did either

Here is another quote folks can argue about: “Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the Act depriving a whole nation of arms as the blackest. If we want the Arms Act to be repealed, if we want to learn the use of arms, here is a golden opportunity. If the middle classes render voluntary help to Government in the hour of its trial, distrust will disappear, and the ban on possessing arms will be withdrawn.” - Gandhi
Pretty clear that he wanted Indians to be able to have guns...Leave a comment:
