i must admit these class designation confuse me. is there a concise explanation of the different classes without reading through the rulebook? What class would my car be in:
'91 325i with Sport package
Ground Control Coilovers with Koni SA FSD dampers
GC camber plates
Treehouse CABs
stock sways
stock LSD, transmission etc.

STX with street tires, DSP with R-Comps.
If you have changed the steering wheel and gotten rid of the airbag, you can't run STX.
Yes, I am the timing chief for the local region, and run a DSP 325i.

It's a simple concept overall. Basically, the letters A-H are standard for each class. They separate cars by performance, which varies by the actual class level (see next sentence). So then you have stock (S), street prepared (SP), prepared (P), and modified (M). All of these classes utilize r-comps (not required, but recommended), and to understand them, you basically have to read the rulebook. If you don't want r-comps, you could go into a street touring class (STS, STX) and run with other people with street tires (you'll probably get killed by WRX's and the like). Then there is SM, a class which has "loose" rules made to allow cars that don't fit into the other ones nicely.
That's my very basic understanding of the system anyway. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
thanks. that clears things up somewhat. to clarify a bit further, i am running street tires, none airbag wheel on airbag car and lsd. rather a mixed bag :) does that dump me into SM? oh and btw, i've never run autox before. does driver skill (or lack of it) even come into play for the class or just the car?

It's 90% skill and 10% car.
You will probably finish in last place, unless there is another novice in your class. don't be a hero, just learn how to drive, and you'll have a blast.

SM gets real complicated once you start reading the minimum weight to displacment and multiplier for boost...
What that comes down to is my 318i is the minimum weight (2200Lbs) for a 2.1L car without boost. Once you add boost there is a 1.4 multiplier involved to calculate displacement etc, then minimum weight increase as displacement increases... SM involves the most research and the rules will probably change again in the near future.
What it all comes down to is there is nothing like reading the manual because then you'll start figuring out what questions to ask, where you wanna take your car class wise, and if it's really worth all the trouble (it is).

So then you have stock (S), street prepared (SP), modified (M), and prepared (P). SM can still be a street legal car, and SM doesn't allow removing all of interior. Prepared car can be all gutted and sometimes aren't street legal.

Correct me if I am wrong.
I'm not commenting that your wrong, I'm commenting because your right.
SM usually implies a street legal car, but like my car which has the CAT removed, so where I live it isn't street legal.
(P)Prepared usually means no longer street legal but I've seen a few that were still even after all the gutting and mods but it had more to do with there local laws where that person lived, or should I say the lack of local laws?

Classing is just based on the car (unless your region has a novice class).
Because of the non-airbag wheel on the airbag car, you will have to run DSP. Every other mod you listed you would have been able to run in STX, but the airbag rules are very specific.

Kind of right. You forgot the ST classes, which are meant to fall between Stock and SP. Many of the front runner SP cars are trailered to events and not street legal any more. SP rules allow modifications which make cars highly unliveable for the street.
The set of classes really is:
Stock (A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H)
ST (S,S2,X,U)
SP (A,B,C,D,E,F)
SM/SM2
Prepared (X,B,C,D,E,F,G)
Modified (A,B,C,D,E,F)
It's kind of hard to say you progress directly from one to another--an E36 M3 will run BS, BSP, FP. A 318is runs GS,DSP. 325e/i runs DS,DSP.
I don't remember the Prepared and Modified classings off the top of my head. ST and SM have a different set of rules such that you really would need to check the rulebook to figure out exactly where they run. MOST 325s will run in STX.
The key to remember with the rule book: If it doesn't say that you CAN change something or run something, then you can't.
You will probably finish in last place, unless there is another novice in your class. don't be a hero, just learn how to drive, and you'll have a blast.
I have no idea about your steering wheel, though.
you mis-understood. what i meant was whether the determination of which class you can run in factors in driver skill. i.e. being an autox noob, can i run with other noobs and not experts? thats how DE works typically, but i guess this is actually competitive hence the rules.

tks. so if i put my airbag wheel back on i can run in STX? what are the pros/cons vis a vis the two classes and should i care ?
