Not all local chapters have a "Novice" class. Basically on top of all the classes they would have a -N class, so something like GS-N (as in G Stock - Novice), and I believe that only works with Stock and maybe STX classes but not SM and the like.

From the mods you have listed, yes. The advantage of running STX would be running against other cars on 'street tires' (in quotes b/c the really competitive fast ST guys run Yok Advan Neovas or Falkens, and some of them trailer the tires to the event so they are just as bad as running R comps...) Not that it matters to you at the moment, but STX also allows big brake kits, which are illegal in SP trim.

As a novice, you're not likely to be competing for trophies anyway, and the smaller wheel definitely makes it easier to steer quickly (my airbag wheel is in the garage somewhere)

I'd say run whichever one has more people in it since that will give you more of an idea of where you stand.

        Was working.
I lost FTD to a couple of SM Hondas, but easily beat all the BMWs. I'm still not sure why we let them in :)

The set of classes really is:
            Stock (A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H)
            ST (S,S2,X,U)
            SP (A,B,C,D,E,F)
            SM/SM2
            Prepared (X,B,C,D,E,F,G)
            Modified (A,B,C,D,E,F)

It's kind of hard to say you progress directly from one to another--an E36 M3 will run BS, BSP, FP. A 318is runs GS,DSP. 325e/i runs DS,DSP.
I don't remember the Prepared and Modified classings off the top of my head. ST and SM have a different set of rules such that you really would need to check the rulebook to figure out exactly where they run. MOST 325s will run in STX.

The key to remember with the rule book: If it doesn't say that you CAN change something or run something, then you can't.

Not to beat the dead horse, but just to clarify. The early 318i's (SOHC, not DOHC 318s) are to run in FSP/FP and not DSP is that correct ?

Also, when does one decide to run in OSP ?

              That's right.

No idea. It's not a nationally recognized class, so I haven't ever heard of it. The National SP classes were listed in my original post.

Cool, thank you. Yes, the "OSP" is a local class for cars that don't fall into any other classification.
