Here's some more ideas for you Nigel. I've seen a few pics online of wrapped dashes and this is by far the cleanest. Don't know if it's OEM or what but it was in an M3 convertible. Note where the stitching is located and how the column cover is also wrapped.

I was considering the double stitching all around so that it would tie in better with the center console but I was worried it might be too busy looking. I'm even considering filling in the passenger recessed pocket. I'll probably get two dashes done and sell the one I like the least.

that dash distracts you from the white center console.

Man, that is the best looking covered dash I have seen in an e30. Why are you getting it covered though? It's seems like something that is such a bitch to do and will most likely de-laminate sitting in the sun. Most re wraps I have seen look pretty bad or looked good at one point and have since deteriorated pretty quickly.

I think good condition stock dashes look great and dont really detract from whatever interior you put in your car.

That's why u get the small tighter stitching so it doesn't stand out so much and looks more subtle. As for maintenance, I guess you would have to cover it and constantly condition it.

The newest used stock dash is 21 years old. I plan on keeping my car forever and didn't feel like paying over $600 for a new one. I'm getting it done in leatherette so I won't have to worry too much about shrinkage or cracking. After weighing the options I think i'll get more bang for my buck with a wrap.
