Hybrid is simply a way to get people used to the idea of an electric car. Eventually 100% EVs will be the norm once the range is up. I have wanted a 100% EV for my daily driver but the range is still too low for me and I cant afford the Tesla.

Unless that range was at least 500 miles with a 5 min charge. No way you could ever take an electric car on a road trip. Maybe if it was solar powered and moved at 2 mph. Want to see that happen though. Traveling cross country would be so cheap.

hybrid is definitely not half assed. i absolutely love petrol engines. there is just something about all the moving parts moving in perfect sync and the noises and smells that they make. these new super cars using hybrid technology to give you all the lost power from the turbos using the battery and then continue adding power in conjunction with the petrol engine is brilliant.
oh, and at this time, it's no where near as echo friendly as they make it seem.

I know Tesla is expensive but 300 mile range and super charging stations across the country with 20 min 50% charge makes cross country trips pretty practical. You can drive from LA to NY for free with their supercharging stations. Time your next fill up at the gas station. Time how long it takes to have a meal at a restaurant. 20 min is hardly anything and if you sat down for an hour meal you would have more than 50% charge.
I say hybrid is half assed because it still sucks the gasoline tit. When you go all in like Tesla has you get better results much faster. If a large manufacturer would do this with their deep pockets the technology could be here a lot sooner.Comment

Lol. And the epic part is that Clarkson made fun of Piers Morgan last night.

unless they can design these batteries to be able to charge rapidly and in conjunction with a solar panel on the roof of the car, you'll be paying a lot in electricity with the batteries that are currently on the market.

Anyways did you guys see the part where they tested the new 1 series versus the VW? Apparently Clarkson sucks in a straight line and hydroplaned off the track. Either that or he had Traction Control off.

he hydroplaned. no big deal. when you are traveling 120mph and you're driving on a flooded road like that you are bound to fly off. of course fwd is safer in those kind of conditions just like it's safer in snow. the rear end won't fly you on you.Last edited by ethrtyiS; 03-03-2014, 05:18 PM.

300 mile range. 20min 50% charge. Non issue. The number of Model S's on the road proves that these specs are perfectly acceptable (though they will improve). The main issue is the big companies are half assing their efforts with hybrids. How is it a small company can do it but the large manufactureres can't. Sucking the petrol tit. If a large manufacturer went at these issues head on there is no reason they couldn't overcome them. Soon Tesla will have a lower priced vehicle and there will be no more excuses why the large manufactureres couldn't have gotten the jump on things.Comment

it's not entirely dependent to the car manufacturers. you have to realize how much governments make off of petrol and diesel. and when large manufacturers do start, it's going to be very long transition. it's not going to be that easy.

I realize that. That is why I criticise them so much. Giant puppets. It will end up hurting them in the end.Comment

it's not up to them though. they must abide by the rules or risk not being able to sell cars here in the states with the rules and regulations we have. take a look at europe for instance, diesels have been used widely for many many years getting great gas mileage and eco friendly. we are just not getting them; granted we do have them but it was just not as mainstream as all our regular petrol pumps here. hell they've made engines run off water, and batteries for years. will governments adopt them, no. why? simple answer, they won't be anymore tax revenue coming in. tesla makes only one type of car, ev's, that's what they do.

Diesels should be more main stream imo. Why is it that compared to the rest of the world diesel is stuuuuupid expensive. It's the crudest form of fuel and should be cheaper to manufacture so whats with that price...

On another note, this picture sums up my fun for the weekend. $600 and change later I will be back in business.
The 3" wood screw came from the sidewall of my left rear tire on the 525i. Getting new Michelin Super Sports for the M5 and putting the Continentals on the 525i.
The broken piece is from my M5's ignition lock. Ordered that when I got in this morning. Hope to have everything together by the weekend. Fortunately I had a couple binder clips in the M5 glove box. I was able to use one of them and the factory trunk tool kit to remove my ignition lock, start the car and disable the column lock. I really didn't want to tow it.Comment
