I have an 84 e30 so the two bolts that go into the shift plate and into the tranny are really close to the selector rod and selector shaft. Like you know how you can feel the grooves going into gears, 2nd and 4th feels like just a wall. I can pull back and slide it from 4th to 2nd and not be engaged in gear. Really irritating.

Sounds like your shifter is not lined up in the tunnel. Probably sitting too far back not letting you get into 2nd & 4th

Alright i'll try and move the buffer tower stopper to the second hole and see what happens.

My shifter bushings took a shit on me a while ago and wouldn't get out of third gear. Redid all my bushings and now it won't go into 2nd or 4th. Everything else goes in just fine. Tranny issue?

Nope, just redid the bushings and seals with the old shifter. Still won't go into 2nd or 4th. Had a friend shift while I looked at the shifter and it looks like everything is clearing. Doesn't make sense if my selector shaft is broken because it can still go into all the upper gears, R, 1, 3, 5. Honestly at a loss right now and am about to just drop the damn tranny and open everything up.
