I mean I don't think it'a a first thought to take out the rifles and handguns burred in the car at night when all they're doing is sleeping somewhere and carrying on the next day.

People who are victims of crime dont know they are going to be stolen from. So to armchair quarterback this with he/should have done this or that differently is kind of a mute point. What he should have done is sit near his window with his AK -47 and wait for the impending theft to occur if he or she knew that there was going to be thieves working over their stuff.

Better yet, he should have rented a trained fighting Pit Bull for a day or 3 and left food and water for it in the UHaul so the thieves would not have any asses left. Actually , what he should have done is run an 8 gauge wire from the postitive post of the Uhauls battery to a wet sponge on the rear of the UHaul door and then watered down the outside area of the door and ground. Oh and then did a rain dance and summoned the ghost of BenJamin Franklin. Just a bit of stray current is all it would have taken.

Ya see how this can be less than helpful?

Also, its North Carolina. Everyone has guns there and more than likely they were packed away in the UHaul and not the car. I am speculating on this point as I have not concrete knowledge of where the gun or guns were stored at the time of the theft.

Most guys I know won't let their firearms stay unattended, if not in a safe, for more than the time you go to the bathroom. That is civilian, ex-cops, active and nonactive military.

That might be the few people I know though.

Not sure who this was to. It can go either way.

Yes , I guess it can. sigh

Its just generally a sad state of affairs when people always have to have their guns for protection from other people that have to have their guns. There has been a radical shift towards gun violence in society as we all know and it would be nice if bad people did not make good people exercise their rights to use deadly force.

Put rats in a cage with limited food source. Everything is cool for a while. Everyone gets along. Then they multiply and the food source grows smaller and smaller. Until the cage is full. Then the rats begin eating their kind and it becomes a cage full of some big rats and other dead/mutilated rats. Its the density of the rat population and the limited resources that determine this outcome.
Take this and apply it to the growing human population that gathers around major metropolitan areas.

The difference is - humans have developed something the animals (rodents in this case) have not and that is the ability to kill from long distance.

No, they don't keep their guns in arms length so they have protection. They keep it that close because it is just the correct way to handle guns. All of them except one (the retired Richmond cop/detective) do not carry a gun on them, so that proves they don't need them for "protection".

The word you used was "unattended" to have a fire arm that is unattended means that it is conversely attended. To have an attended firearm would mean that is is within easy access. While not at arms length it would still be acessable and attended.

The correct way to handle guns is to have them accessable to oneself while not accessable to others ( a tough balance to strike - no doubt) and I would be willing to bet if there was a situation involving lethal force and they were present somehow that firearm would be even more well attended -in a New York minute.

If the firearm is 4 feet away and 2 steps away it is not on ones person but is it attended? 5 feet away? 6, and so on. Where does the line between attended and non attended begin? I sure dont know. To some 4 feet away is still attended and to others (sedentary slow walkers, oxygen machine, etc) - 4 feet must seem like a mile.

You are taking that super literally, but okay.

All I am saying is they would have brought the guns inside with them where they were staying.

Point taken. Without properly packing a U Haul and just placing guns (in cases more than likely) in with other stuff that is being moved. One would not think to place the guns on top or near the end of the loading door . Especially, if hurried packing is involved. Then when parking the U Haul it is easy to think . "Damn , now I gotta dig out 7 boxes , a headboard, microwave and move a flat screen TV out of the way to get to my firearms"." Naaaaa, Im gonna get some shut eye- everything should be fine". Well in this instance it was'nt fine.

I am being literal for a reason and its to point out that every decision we make is "situational" and a great many factors will skew or shift our decision making process . All of this data that we collect (sometimes unconsciously) shapes those decisions.

In retrospect , sure it would have been a wise decision to dig out the guns but unfortunately things did not work out that way.

I feel like most gun-conscious people would have thought to pack them where they are easily accessible. But you're right, not ever scenario is like that. However, if they are moving because they are switching bases then guns are often the last thing packed because they are given out of the dispensary when leaving the base.

This does apply if moving bases. I was unaware of this practice and it makes sense that it would be one of the last things packed in that scenario. When its late and you pull into a motel people instinctively just want to get in and get settled and get some rest. Long drives tend to do that to you . :)
