I'm just saying that Will is talking about running 17's ("tires will either rub or be too small to protect the wheels") without any regard to width and offset. He condemns stretched tires and says big wheels look goofy and hot wheels-esque....yet he runs a tire that's 0.9" smaller than what his car came with. Running a tire too small, in my opinion, looks 100x worse than a wheel that may be 'too big' with a correct diameter tire. His car came with a 215/40-17 when he bought it (23.8" diameter, slight stretch on an 8.5" width wheel). He complained that it was too stretched (arguable, but whatever), so he goes on to use tires that are 0.9" smaller than stock diameter. Even if I ignore my opinions and taste, condemning tires that are too small in width and using tires that are too small in diameter is hypocritical.

Meh, too each their own. If you haven't noticed there's a lot of things that Will doesn't fancy in regards to style/tuning/whatever. Both of you are on opposite ends of the spectrum in regards to opinion. It's not like he jumped in your build thread with "hey dipshit, your tire size is bad and you should feel bad."

Though sometimes it does sound like that...

                            How the car came:

Clearly there is no protection for the rim there. The tire is stretched. That first pic is of the wheel with the crack in it (that I didn't happen to notice when I bought the car, but did find when I attempted to put some tires that weren't stretched on the wheels (that didn't fit anyway in a 225/45/17. I couldn't even turn the wheels a little without contact.)

So, I was able to get a set of stock M3 wheels that came with 15 year old Nittos that were 225/45/15s. The first thing I noticed was that the car turned better, accelerated better and stopped better not to mention the ride was better. On 15 year old tires, even crap newer tires should do better than tires that old. It wasn't the case.

I want a square sidewall, not canted inward, not ballooned out. Finding that is not easy. Are the stock 15x7.5 wheels a little narrow, yeah, they are. But the fact that the car drives 100% better than it did with the 17s makes it a done deal. If I could find a set of 15x8s that I like, I'll likely go with them. Why did I go with a 225/45/15? Because it was the widest tire that would fit without rubbing, and I autocross so I want the most grip I can get. Would I love a set of Evo3 16 inch wheels for my car? Hell yes, but the tire selection is down to what, 3 tires? More likely I'll go buy a set of Kosei 15x8s and call it good. They don't look as good as the stock wheels, but they are lighter and wider, both paramount to the cause.

Do I give a crap about fender gap? Not in the least.
Does the car look ok here? Yeah I guess, but the suspension geometry is all screwed up.

The solution, raising the front of the car about 1.75 inches. I'll take fender gap over shitty suspension geometry any day of the week. Not to mention the fact that I'll be able to run my front splitter without worrying about ripping the thing off, or scraping the crap out of the front of the car, and the exhaust. Will the front of the car be higher than the rear? Yeah, I bet it will be. I'll need to figure out how to raise the rear as well. I'll likely have a set of half inch spacers machined that will fit under the lower spring pads, or I'll go out and buy the adjustable ones. It doesn't really matter which as long as I can get the roll centers and roll couple correct. The goal here is to make the car handle the best it can, period. No, I'm not going to go as far as corner weighting the car because I don't want a car that I drive on the street to sit all crooked. Still, when I can go out and win my class autoXing on street tires when the runners up are all on Hossier A6s, I must be doing something right. (I'm not that great of a driver either, but obviously I don't suck.)

I tend to take a very conservative stance on setups. I don't like breaking things, but I don't like loosing a close race because something could have been set up better. I'm not the type of person to take my car to someone and say "make it work" I do the work myself. I research it, and when I find the answers, I then make the change. My theory on raising the front end has already proven its self by installing the stock strut mounts that are a good 3/4s of an inch taller than the G/C adjustable plates I have. The car handles better even though it has less camber and caster than I was running. When I get the spacers on the G/C plates, it will sit a quarter of an inch taller placing my roll center right where I want it, and giving me some nice big fender gaps (oh the horror ) The result? I don't blow through my suspension travel like I did, I have less static camber loss, less body roll, and overall a better handling car that makes better use of the tires it wears. Oh yeah, on the smaller diameter, it helps through corners, and accelerating out of them. Who cares about top end (like 140+ isn't good enough, besides its not like I do more than about 80 on the street anyway). Obviously, there is a bit of thought that goes into the setup of my cars. I will never sacrifice performance for looks.

Everytime someone posts something about tire sizes in here the same people debate the pros vs. cons of wheel diameter/tire size/tire stretch/etc.

For Will a proper conservative setup pleases him whereas we have the Viveks and Marcos that like the 16 and 17s with some stretch and enjoy the looks of it vs the over practicality and functionality of it.

This debate is about personal tastes, so it seems very pointless to argue.
