I think if you did, you would see what we are all addressing here. Don't get me wrong, the M42 had its benefits given the mods I had (lite fly is the best thing that could have been done for it). But after spending all that time, money, and effort I felt like it was all for nothing when I was done.
The reality is your build purpose/direction. Period correct, power, a balance of the two, stock motor with some umph, etc. Everyones goals are different. I am struggling between a stroker M20 or S54 in my vert. Both have upsides and downsides, but I am torn. Everyone in here would argue which is the better option, and I would bet those are the same struggles going through my head right now.- Greg

Why does he keep comparing the m42 to an s14?
Just because they are both 4 cylinders?
Hell, might as well throw in the m10 and then the m12, because those are both four bangers.

the s14 stock makes 82hp/liter (190/2.3). the m42 makes 77hp/liter (140/1.8). the m20 makes 68hp/liter. the m42 and s14 are the most comparable engines for e30s that came factory equipped. m42 with a $150 chip is making roughly 82hp/liter (150/1.8) and is in s14 territory without ITBs.
m42 is pretty potent. the m10 is not in the same ballpark AT ALL with 55hp/liter factory.Last edited by 5Toes; 02-11-2016, 06:12 PM.Comment

I have driven all three, and this comparison is not accurate if you actually drive them. They are all different motors in different ways, this is an apples to oranges comparison. My reference for the M42 was one with a chip and a lite flywheel (my car), and I would not compare that motor to the S14 that loved dancing at 8k. The M42 can't even go there. No comparison. I am done discussing this until you drive all motors listed in your eval. I couldn't care less about numbers from ratios Hp/displacement ratios. Case in point: I rode in a freshly rebuilt E30 with a 2.5 M20 making 127hp (had been dynoed), and we were passing an E90 S65 at PIR on the road course. The motor doesn't make you fast, driver skill does.the s14 stock makes 82hp/liter (190/2.3). the m42 makes 77hp/liter (140/1.8). the m20 makes 68hp/liter. the m42 and s14 are the most comparable engines for e30s that came factory equipped. m42 with a $150 chip is making roughly 82hp/liter (150/1.8) and is in s14 territory without ITBs.
