I can second that. We've fired up the M42, the M20 in the Rat Trap and the race car, and the M30 in the Alpina with most everything unplugged except the CPS sensor. It'll just fall back on it's guesstimate fuel maps and run pig rich.
Just go through the basics:
Is there voltage to the coil?
Is the coil firing? (the old spark plug test)
Is there fuel pressure to the rail?
Are the injectors getting a pulse?
If those four pass, your engine should run. The only exception is if you have no compression. But that falls in to the 4 things an engine needs to run - Fuel, compression, spark, timing. Everything else is just to improve the running performance..
