Why use recovered R12 when there are so many alkylbenzene compatible alternatives? Turf is right about one thing- you need to locate and fix your leaks FIRST. If you're willing to make the trip I'd be happy to help you get your system up and running for the cost of parts and materials.Comment

Your compressor has to be operating in order to see any bubbles in the sight glass. If you have no remaining charge in the system the suction pressure will likely be below the threshold of your low pressure switch, in which case your compressor clutch will not engage.
Use a jumper wire to give the clutch connector 12v directly from the positive battery connections at the passenger side firewall while the engine is running and tell us what happens.Comment
