I've always hated Vulvas but when I had no choice but to drive my brothers S60 when I first moved to SoCal, I cemented a few things. That era of Vulvas blow. Literally that car was a POS, but damn that I5 turbo was giving me bad thoughts. I thought they had purchased the design from Audi, and their old I5 20v turbos

nah it's their own design
there's been several 5cyl designs out there and they're always a compromise between 4 and 6 that never seems to be particularly great.Comment

haha...ok.
..but those 850s were actually FWD race cars. And they won the BTCC, to show people they could build a badass fast wagon. My 850 had 230hp and tons of torks.
Stoopid trivia fact - the same guy designed all the wagons from the 122 to the 850.
oop...I'll stop now.Comment

I think there are literally four old Volvo wagons around my neighborhood that all have busted headgaskets.sigpic
Currently without an e30. Will probably die soon.

VW mk3 everything is plastic and breaks.
E36/e34 m50s like to let go headgaskets if you let it overheat
Volvo 850s also like to blow though gaskets, and fuck doing water pumps on FWD(let alone any work on the front of the engine)
I think most can agree that the 240 generation was the best built in terms of longevity. But the 850 isnt a bad car, they have their common problems. But like any car, it all depended on how the previous owners treated them.
Wagons are utilitarian, so most got beat to fuck.
this one seems to be well taken car of.Comment

Bite your tongue. The whole 4 inline, 4 boxer, 6 inline, 6v, and so on are the most common engines. There is a really really great book about engine design(I have it here somewhere - I'll find it) and a 5 cyl engine isn't as strange as it seems.Originally posted by Matt-Bhey does anyone know anyone who gets upset and makes electronics?Comment

ehh they're not bad per se, just not amazing. except for audi 5cylinders (80s-90s and TTRS) almost all of them are completely forgettable. most never seem to really deliver on the mantra of "4 cyl fuel economy with 6 cyl power" that people say about them.Comment
