Working on swapping my 323 soon too but's not derail the thread any further, after all it is a for sale thread.
Coilovers are key, and if you drove properly set-up swap cars in comparison, there is no comparison. If you have H&R Sport springs or some soft suspension, than yes the added weight of the swap, or even a turbo set-up on an m20 can be felt (m20 turbo is a different convo compared to a 210whp s14 that costs almost as much, lol). Also, making 210whp in an s14 still gives you a lack of torque and costs as much as an s52, lol.

GLWS OP. Anyone that hasn't driven a PROPER swap car before shouldn't comment about the car being ruined (not saying that's you Barry). These swaps are popular for many reasons, and it makes the E30 m3 a better all around car from a performance and reliability perspective. The OP's car is well sorted and would be a great al around street and track car.

Thank you for the reply. I dont mind the swap or the color. And thats good to know that the panels are original. Any chance you can scan the carfax, or email it to me? I think with a nice set of wheels and a few changes this could be a wonderful car.

Im guessing the swap isnt BAR'd, but is it complete?

A/C works too? Thats a HUGE bonus

Still curious about what rear seat the car would get

BAR = Bureau of Automotive Repair

Basically this question refers to the legality of the swap. If a swap has been "BAR'd" or BAR - approved, it means this can be smogged in CA, legally.

The fact that you dont know about it suggests that you know people and never worried... Is that part of the purchase too, a smog cert?

The lack of correct M3 rear seat and the smog issue could be the dealbuster for me, as those two together are a good $1500-2000

Im not out totally yet though, so please post that CarFax info when you have a chance

BAR'd means that the vehicle has been inspected by the state and will pass emissions requirements for registration in CA. In its current configuration, I would guess this is not the case (the swap).

Go to the CA DMV website and check out the procedure for getting the car BAR-certified. It shouldn't be too difficult, but it will probably be tedious. Basically, everything associated with the swapped motor, from the intake to the exhaust, needs to be transferred to the new vehicle. Intake box, O2 sensors, cat, etc. It all has to be there.

In CA, you cannot legally transfer title unless the vehicle will pass an emissions test. As the seller, that responsibility falls upon you.

FYI, here's a link to a M3, albeit with a rebuilt title, but original S14 motor, which just sold on BAT (which tends to fetch higher prices, imo): https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1989-bmw-m3-20/

I am curious where you heard this? The rear convertible seat is a good 8" narrower and does not fit properly in a coupe. Not to mention, the design is different in the center "hump" and along the top.

Back on topic, OP I think you have a pretty cool car here. It's 80% of the way there, if it were me I'd redo the interior, swap the wheels, and have one helluva fun car. Is it original? No, but that's obviously not what this particular car is "for". I like the unique color and with a little love I would whip this thing right into shape.

California smog stuff aside, you would still be able to sell it in many other states without a problem. I would imagine the audience you'd reach on here and various auction sites would cast a net much wider than your local craigslist.

Overall, nice car and good luck with the sale. Simon, buy this or I will lol.

Yeah vert rear seats aren't really close other than the pattern.

My bad. I forgot about the narrower seat. I guess owning nothing but 'verts makes one susceptible to bouts of insanity. I'll delete the incorrect info from my post. As Reelizmpro pointed out, it's more about the stitching/pattern.
