I will say in many respects they are much more reliable but ultimately (as of today) N54>N55 if you want some real power, easily, and cost effectively. No one has extensively mapped the N55 ecu as this was the ECU that started the changeover that theyre now using in all the F cars and thus youre extremely limited tuning wise. Cobb has stuff for early N55 cars but only have defined a select few tables and have left as far as future support goes.
do you happen to have an N55 bin dump?

Dyno tuned a pretty badass car we built. 99Z3 coupe, originally M52TU, Swapped with an M52. AASC Rotrex 13psi, intercooled, meth, m50 manifold, s52 cams, stock motor otherwise. 2 runs are max power on pump and then after turning meth on and retuning with it. Not bad for a 2.8L!

Not sure. Ide love to dyno one but most of the people that swap them dont bother dynoing them. Youre welcome to come by and run it!

Did the E9x N55s run an MEVD17 as well? or just F3X? I thought the E9x cars ran MSD81.1

wow 400+whp is pretty insane, but even the turbo M52 makes a ton of power. that gives me bad ideas because there are CARB legal supercharger kits

Havent seen a ton of 'bolt on' M52 turbo kits north of 400whp... And yeah once you get the carb sticker you can still tweak it some :P

Retuned an earlier ZM3 coupe. Bone stock S52 with dyno tune before to M50 manifold dyno tune after. No other changes, still full stock exhaust etc... As you can see the M50 manifold loosing torque no matter the tune myth has been dispelled.

Tuned another E92 M3. Pulleys and Intake and mufflers swapped to vibrant resonators.

30 HP from the M50 manifold? That's impressive.

And that's only peak to peak numbers. If you look around 6k RPM, there looks to be more than 30whp, gains under the curve are awesome.

Prob one of the coolest cars weve ever built. Prefer it over all the F8X.

(This is the previously mentioned M52 swapped Z coupe)

Jordan from Rktunes has tuned plenty in that power range and better, comes down to the set-up and the tune. Hell, Franc in NY is making 717whp on a stock m50 Vanos, bottom end, modified NV head, s52 cams, arp studs, stock HG, hx40, turbo ebay turbo everything, and e85 on 26 psi. That set-up has lower quality parts than a "bolt on" kit from any of the vendors and still performs, because it works well and has a great tune. Supercharged m/s5x and turbo ones can't even compare.

That being said, an e30 with a supercharged 24v making 400whp is much more manageable to drive than a turbo one with the same power. That car you tuned would be even better with e85! Jordan tuned a stock motor, stock cam, Vortech based s52 e36 on, e85 at 14 psi and made 507whp/392wtq, and it ran an 11.67 @ 126! Blowers LOVE the corn juice!
