    New IX jack test failed

just bought a 91 IX with 297k miles on from a BMW tech. Has his own shop for 20years..I brought it home and tried the jack test and the front tires didn't pull me. He said he has never heard of this and not to believe everything I read or see on youtube.

I also jacked up the front and the rear wouldn't push me.i jack the entire car up with jack stands and all wheels turn, but fronts turn faster

Also when I had the rear jacked up I turned the drivers side by hand and the passenger wheel didn't do anything

TC was about dry,so I filled up with ATF ,drove it around, got it good and warm, tried jack test again...FAILED!!

Any thoughts.?? Guess I need a new TC or at least a VC ........Looks like I just got the shaft..can't even trust a BMW mechanic

The car should pull itself with just the front wheels on the ground. Another quick check is to simply jack ONE front wheel up - if it spins freely with no resistance, the VC needs to be double checked with a jack test.

A worn VC is not the end of the world. It is still four-wheel drive, just not as capable as it could be. The best I've heard it described is that now the transfer case acts like an open-differential instead of as a limited-slip as originally intended which is consistent with what you describe. The VC can be had for $580 and probably a long wait for it to come over on a boat. Plus labor to install. Good luck.

make sure you replace the shifter bushings while the TC is out. You can't access it without dropping the TC.

this was my biggest mistake. Shifter slop all over the place, and had the chance to change it all during the 5-spd swap.

What? A worn VC will give you ZERO power to the front wheels. I did a one-wheel peel up my driveway a couple winters ago and that's how I knew both the xfer case and rear diff had bad VCs.
