M20 has two crank sensors in different locations

I own a 1986 325es. I have been wanting to replace my crank sensor for a while because it was repaired using black electrical tape by the previous owner. My problem is that I recently found out that my car should have 2 cranks sensors at the flywheel, but my car has the late model sensor at the damper...

So I just left it alone for the time being until I could figure out what was going on.

A few days ago, I started removing my steering rack to replace it and noticed a crank sensor installed at the flywheel and an empty hole where the second (top) sensor should be installed.

Both connectors are plugged into the harness. The damper sensor is connected with blade type connectors and not the actual plug from the sensor.

Has anyone ever seen or heard of this? I am not sure if I can remove the damper sensor and go with the 2 at the flywheel or if I can eliminate the one at the flywheel... or if I just have to purchase one of each and keep the car running the way it is right now.

Look at your ECU part number and the plug:

        Just checked, and the numbers I got off the ECU are 1730575001 & 0 261 200 173.

Pretty much, thanks. I'm just still a bit confused why the original flywheel sensor is still in place. I'm going to unplug it when i get a chance and see what happens.

I bought the car from a friend of mine and he said he doesn't remember doing any of this.

They sell plugs to close up the holes on the transmission bell housing. Not sure if they are NLA but maybe someone can 3D print you a set.

Someone converted it to M1.3, it no longer uses the bell housing sensors and the previous owner left them in place. Not a big deal. I run an ETA trans on my 325i that still has the sensors installed but the wiring is cut.

So do you have an E engine? What are you r3ving it to?

Dealer. I've been good at scooping up the last bits in stock last few years..
