      people are just used to 200k mile M20s that have seen very little in the way of maintenance, probably have been overheated at least once and run on nothing but AM/PM Arco 87.

      as far as how much it's making - save $50, go to a dyno, and find out. If the bottom end was fresh, 165-170 isn't that unrealistic. I have a dyno plot from a guy with a stock 2.5 bottom end and the schrick 288. he made 165whp at 6000rpm, and that particular cam will extend the torque curve well into 6500rpm so it could have been more. Of course it was also a meticulous race build, so a junker motor might make a lot less.

        To the wheels?? that would be on the 180+ crank hp. I think you mean 160hp not whp.

        My car has been very well maintained. I rarely drove it, i only put 3500 miles on it in 1 year. It only has 120k miles on the block and 1k on my new head. Never ran anything but Shell/76 91. If i can make 160 whp i will be extremly happy.

          Yep, to the wheels. The M20B25 makes 168hp in new, stock form. The local racers (PRO3 cars) estimate they are making somewhere around 190hp at the crank with chip, exhaust & other miscellaneous allowed mods.

            spend the money on the head and you can do it easy. That means a good 3- angle valve grind, maybe have the valves back cut. Don't spend a lot of time on porting - clean up the bowls (there are some obvious casting ridges that can be cleaned up), smooth it out, don't polish the intake for heaven's sake. making the intake port bigger only makes the turbulence problem of the 885 head worse, so leave it alone other than gasket matching. the ports and valves are already a good size, but you can get +1mm valves if you wish. that will require some de-shrouding work in the CC, and goes better with an overbored block.

            then you need some good springs - the ones schrick reccomends for the 288 are fine. soft springs will make the valves float and break rockers. Then get the IE heavy duty rockers, and send them in to be x-rayed. if there are any with flaws (pores, cracks) send them back. have them shot peened or polished. Build your head and tune it properly on a dyno (war chip maybe?). it will scream to a 7500rpm redline no problem. that means you want to keep a 4.10 lsd ;)

            if you're just going to put a 288 cam in and the stock rockers/springs, you're stuck with a basically stock redline and are missing out on the high rpm VE potential (and horsepower increase).

              I think I KNOW what I said, and I did not mis-speak. I also think that drivetrain losses in the 20% region might be true for old domestic TH350's, but would not apply to a G260 and a 4.10LSD

                      No really, the best part is wondering who fuct up a new head job and it leaks oil. Maintenance, then hp estimates. You must be a typical Cali-bread rice boy.

                        oh yeah, if you are actually building this PLEASE check your valve clearance at TDC, especially since you've skimmed the head there's about a 99% chance the valves will hit the pistons unless you cut the valve pockets deeper.

                          Well that is awsome hp for almsot stock e30. e30s lose inbwtween 13-15%.

                          Yea thats taken care of. Am not sure how many mm's is cut down though.

                            Those things should have been done when the head was off. did you have a Shadetree Idiot work on your car? Why did you have someone else adjust your valves?

                              he may have done it hot, which you can do, but you gotta be fast and you have to have a bit of experience at it. if you take too long the last valves you adjusted will be too loose.

                                You'd be surprised Farbin, not everyone on here is an idiot. What's with all the trash talk. I don't adjust my valves either, I don't think I am qualified to do that, hence the reason its the only thing a mechanic takes care of for me.
