Did you switch the impulse sensor connector with the crank position sensor connector by the thermostat housing? Almost EVERY time something like this happens with an I engine install, this is the culprit. Even if you think you did it right, take 2 minutes and switch the two.

but I am not getting 12v when rotor passes over individual post inside cap.
I assume that means its a bad cap?correct
If you are getting 12Volts at the distributor cap you have a problem somewhere else, most likley the coil.

squidmaster-yes it is cranking now. yes the toothed crank pulley was swapped over as well.

jo3y- would a bad cps cause it not to start or have spark?

A bad CPS will result in no spark.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Do you happen to know the ohm range it should have?

an improper air gap on your CPS, a bad coil, bad grounds.

off topic... i used to live in lakeland, small world

what is the gap between your CPS and your trigger wheel. If that gap isnt correct the sensor cannot pick up the trigger wheel

Have you double checked that when the find tdc on the crank wheel, your cam gear is also at tdc? Timing is everything.

Did you try this? Its easy to get the two confused.

The gap between the cps and crank is .040. Before i put the engine in i replaced the timing belt and made sure both camshaft and crankshaft were at tdc. I have switched the two connectors.
I have been looking into checking the dme pins for power and continuity as seen in this thread http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1487148

I checked everything that it said to do in this thread and it all checked out good.
