I just want to replace the plastic rails. So can it be done without removing the chain?

no, you have to remove the chain to get it out of the guard rail

Removed the rear main seal from the holder. My BFH had to lend a hand.

make sure that you tap the new one in a mm or two farther than the last one to prevent leaks...

Here's the new one installed. I went 2mm below to avoid leaks. Put a little oil on the lip so it slides in easy when installing.

Does anyone else think that gasket looks like a duck? Quack quack!

Sure does. Ummmm..... I didn't use new washers when replacing that gasket. There was only one screw using a washer also.

                        Update
I had the starter tested and it passed and since the paint was chipping i gave it a coat of paint.

Now I have to figure out a way to remove the crankshaft nut and replace the chain guides and tensioners.

I think this makes a good argument to use BMW coolant only. Would you reuse this thermostat cover??

                          Yeah, use bmw coolant.
If funds were a bit tight, I'd reuse that thermostat cover and just put the hose clamp up further. Double check to make sure there isn't any damage elsewhere too!
