There is a huge difference in speed and feel between an M10 E30 and M42 E30. I wouldn't go spending big bucks to make the swap though.
At a minimum, you would need:
- M42 engine
- M42 wiring harness
- M42 ECU
- M42 Fuel pump and probably some of the related hoses for the system
- m42Engine mounts
- Getrag 240 transmission
- Tranny brace and mounts (if different than what is on the M10 car)
- M42 driveshaft
- Small case 4.10 diff (not sure if the M10 cars had one already)
- M42 radiator and coolant hoses
- M42 throttle cable assembly
- M42 exhaust (cat-back and muffler)
- M42 O2 sensor
There is probably other stuff needed but it is slipping my mind.

All injected e30 run the same capacity fuel pumps, no need to change unless your m10 is carbureted.
m42 swap into m10 or m40 car is quite popular in Europe, but 99% use engine and all the rest (gearbox included) from e36, even better you can fit a 1,9L m44 from newer e36. Reason - original m42 e30 is a unicorn, 99% have been DOHC swapped like 10 years ago. Majority m42 e30 specific parts like intake manifolds, exhaust headers nowhere to be found.
The diff does not have to be changed, I think no explanation required here :D
Exhaust can be hacked up by a guy with a MIG for a few beers using parts from donor car and your current car, since they are both 4 cylinder 1 pipe exhausts.
