How did I just now see this thread?
FWIW my guess is on a hot cam with tons of valve overlap. Either way, youre trying to reinvent the wheel here. This technology has been around forever so I highly doubt you will come up with a SIMPLE solution.
None of those. I was thinking more along the lines of regenerative braking but for compressed air. Fewer moving parts. I've seen it done before - somewhere on the internet. IIRC each side can handle around 9HP.
