If I have to go to the DMV, I'll do them while I'm there, but when I'm anticipating a court date I'll do them online. Usually I drive until I get pulled over since I don't agree with vehicle registration, or at least paying for it.
No fees in IL. They require some things to happen at a DMV. You only pay fees when you use a currency exchange or something. There's a full service DMV about 30 mins away so it's worth it to walk out with all my shit done.

I found out about the plate change hassle when I was in there registering a new vehicle; I asked how I could change my vanity plate. They asked what I had and why I didn't want it any more. I told I'm the plate, he laughed and called over 2 other people, who also laughed. They told me I should just keep it because it's awesome and "you'd he hard pressed to get something else that awesome to go through"

In PA one can get historic tags or antique tags. With historic tags you still have to get your car inspected. The antique tags you have to send in pictures to the state to prove that your car is show room stock. Also with antique tags they are lifetime tags and no inspection. The pictures you send in have to show that the car is showroom stock. They'll fail it even for a simple little car club sticker in the window.

I just took mine to a tags and title place. More upfront obviously, but don't have to prove anything to the DMV. I have also DD my shitty 90 celica on historic tags for 2 years and never had problems.

I'm running historic tags on mine, but only because my insurance balked at the idea of getting street rod plates

Yup, I go to shows in Mt. Airy every so often, at the Jimmy Cone.

Yeah, I have historic plates on both my E30 and my 1600 in MD. Neither are stock, though the E30 is pretty close. If MD considers cupholders to be an extensive modification, I guess I'm done.

Anyway, "extensively modified" seems like a subjective term.

"Judge, I consider extensive modifications to include rocket and/or turbine power. Anything less seems within reason."
