Not a bad idea really but think about the money, and how long it'll take you to pay for it. You're my age, and I know I couldn't afford another project. I have college to pay for in the fall, and you likely do too. Car is $250, not bad at all. You said you can get everything you need minus the engine for another $350, again that's not bad. But a rebuilt engine will cost you about 2 grand, and you can easily put another 2(+++ the sky is the limit) grand into the body and paint. Then there's interior, and wiring stuff that you'll have to figure out. Another 400 bucks for a set of euro bumpers...
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

Pretty cool! So now I'm back to deciding if I want 2 e30s or not.. Hmmm... ;)
I had this situation about 6 years ago when I lived in Seattle. I bought a 1980 Jetta coupe (rare) with no title. I mailed a release of interest to the last registered owner (got it from the DMV), I got the paperwork back signed and after an inspection I got a clean title in my name.

A friend tried the same thing and didnt get the paperwork back so he kept the car in the garage for those 3 years. After thaty he got the title in his name. Its a little bit of work but its worth it if you really want the car.
