It's really the same argument of Cayman vs. 911. One or the other offers better balance, is detuned to not compete, is faster, brakes better, is easier to work on, makes a better daily & etc.

We all know which one is better, and half of us are always wrong.

The real answer is to have both.

Everyone always forgets the 333i, which munches all the others for torque :)

It's not like you'll find one now though.

To me the answer is always M30. None of the weaknesses of the M20 or M42.

The 325iS should have been a 335iS with the M30B35 in it from the e34!

Great combo, but IMO this would have severely cannibalized E34 sales.

The 3 and 5 series have always shared engines. I don't think a 335is would effect e34 sales, but I doubt people would have bought a M3 over a 335is.

I will admit there's not much M42 left in my engine. Just the head and intake manifold are, actually. Varg I forgot you were one of the turbo M42's out there. The all-encompassing thing that sucks about the M42 is that there is not just one thing that will make it faster. Ltw flywheel is necessary, needs a good (not eBay) chip. Better muffler would help too. But, All these bolt-on mods will still leave you dissaponted. I sure was. It wasn't until i did absolutely EVERYTHING that it became a fun engine.
You say "Where are your other two cylinders?"
I say "Where's your other camshaft?"

I think BMW would have been concerned for both - hence it never happened.

A 4 Door 335iS would probably have hurt e34 sales somewhat (the e34 was a far more expensive car than the e30 - the e30 would have been cheaper and offered better performance), and the 2 Door would have hurt M3 sales.

Still, would have been a very robust car new :D
