It's not like you'll find one now though.
To me the answer is always M30. None of the weaknesses of the M20 or M42.
The 325iS should have been a 335iS with the M30B35 in it from the e34!

The 3 and 5 series have always shared engines. I don't think a 335is would effect e34 sales, but I doubt people would have bought a M3 over a 335is.My Garage

I will admit there's not much M42 left in my engine. Just the head and intake manifold are, actually. Varg I forgot you were one of the turbo M42's out there. The all-encompassing thing that sucks about the M42 is that there is not just one thing that will make it faster. Ltw flywheel is necessary, needs a good (not eBay) chip. Better muffler would help too. But, All these bolt-on mods will still leave you dissaponted. I sure was. It wasn't until i did absolutely EVERYTHING that it became a fun engine. You say "Where are your other two cylinders?"
I say "Where's your other camshaft?"
Frankenmotor: if an M42, M44, M20, S50, and S52 were to have a kid.

A 4 Door 335iS would probably have hurt e34 sales somewhat (the e34 was a far more expensive car than the e30 - the e30 would have been cheaper and offered better performance), and the 2 Door would have hurt M3 sales.
Still, would have been a very robust car new :D
