I used the furniture dolly method with the mk1 VWs I used to mess with. Nice to see a similar method used here. Cars coming along very nicely

I've always had the idea of using an engine hoist to lift the car up from the front using the bumper shock mounting points and a cross bar of sorts. It seems like the safest way to lift the front end high enough so that you can position the engine in from the side and then easily lower the front back down. It could all be done without lifting the rear off the ground.

Those particular jack stands are about 4" from max height, and they are towards the front of the frame rails. Could have gone much higher. The jack I use as a 30" lift height as well.
It rolled in trans first from the side swooping around the dangling strut assembly into position.
I was largely tied up with a customer, side work this evening but I did manage to get a little bit done. I bought new front bumper bolts to reinstall the bumper with. These seem to weather pretty poorly over time.
I also laid out and installed the new control arms, sway bar end links, brackets, inner/outer tierods and steering bellows boots. Much to my dismay the boots I ordered (E30 ones) do not fit over the larger diameter steering rack. I'll need to get different ones tomorrow before I can button stuff up.

Rolled under the vehicle.
Then it was as easy as lowering the car slowly and controlled with my jack down over the powertrain package. No removing the hood, no paint damage, and no hoist required!
Some might chuckle at the furniture dolly method, but I'll be damned if it didn't work slick as hell.1988 325 non-letter Seta "Bronzit"
