Actually it depends on what you are shooting. I recently discovered the wonderful world of ND filters so this doesn't really apply to me anymore, but before when I would shoot in mid day I would have to max out my f-stop to use my strobes. The back lip photo I posted was strobed, it doesn't really look like it though.

This photo is strobed and shot at f2.8. Focusing was/is difficult since I converted my 7d to use the old Minolta manual focus lenses. Auto focus and IS are for pussies anyways...

I don't think what we said contradicts at all. Using strobes still takes great timing b/c you only get one shot off (unless you have very nice strobes) with the proper light output. So you have to click at the best moment of action, vs rapid firing.

A few from a ski trip to Revelstoke, Canada. AWESOME small ski town. I know for some of you (Sleeve) tons of light fluffy powder isn't as exciting, but I was like a kid in a candy shop walking around the whole town.

LOL yeah while its not unknown to me at all. This year at home has been an odd one we dont have much of that. All though the hill is starting to get piled on the last few days.

Yeah you are right, learning how to time it (regardless of how your shooting it) so the trick looks good is very difficult. And if the trick is really gnarly, you may only have one take so you really have to be on point. It's really good practice for shooting anything that involves working with models, or other people. I always try to talk to the rider about how they do the trick so I can know when they have full extension or steeze. Riders don't really like having to do a big trick twice if you fucked up the photo.

Good point, I didn't think to ask my friends what trick they were about to try. Later that night we were talking and I realized I missed a potentially great shot b/c I was thinking about how I would do the trick, now how he wanted to do it.

Things that have helped me a lot were looking in magazines back in the day or on flickr now, and analyzing photos. You can determine what lens they used, rough Iso, f-stop, and strobe placement if applicable. Then you also can see how they are timing their photos, and how they are composing them. You obviously don’t want to copy there style, but it gives you an idea of why the photo looks good and how you can better your own shots.

Yeah, I've done some of that for sports, but very little. My passion is auto photography, but in my deep searches I stumbled upon some of the greats and realized I will probably never be on that level so I've lost some motivation. I've learned to step back and just make it fun. (I'm pursuing a much different career, so I'm okay with this)

I just like to bounce photos around and get comfortable with the camera like we do here. I too feel like I could write a book on what I've learned... that feeling alone is satisfying.
