Hi y'all...some great shots here for sure. I'm a new guy to this forum and thought I'd throw this pic up. I took it in 2011. Maybe he's a member here??
I'll do an intro thread when I have pics of my IS on my site.

So I wanted to pick up a 50mm lens however, from more reading/learning, due to the 1.5x crop sensor in my D3100 I should pick up a 35mm lens instead? Because, after the crop factor is taken into account, a 35mm is equivalent to a 50mm. Is that correct?

correct. iirc it doesn't add up to the mm exactly, but its pretty much there. been wanting a prime 85 1.4 for my 5100 but no monies. :-|

It's 'shoots' at the range like a 50mm but does not give the same look/effect. I'd still get the 50mm and simply back up a couple steps.

That makes sense. So if I back up and take the shot it should have the same effect and fov as a 50mm on a full frame?

Here is an idea, buy a DX format 50mm. A 50mm focal length lens is a 50mm lens as long as the format is correct. I use a FX format big lens on a d7000 because I need the focal length that I get with the crop factor, still, for a lot of the stuff I shoot, I need a 500mm lens, the 300mm with the crop factor isn't enough.

Just pick up a good DX 50mm lens and don't worry about it.

I shoot Canon, but I have a fixed 50 and a crop sensor (60D) That said, I love my 50mm. Great lens for portraits, and it does make you get creative with composition and whatnot to get larger objects to fit in the frame.

Same FOV, but not the same 'effect'.

Contrary to popular belief, 35mm on DX != 50mm on FX. FOV is different than depth, and depth is what you are truly paying the big bucks for.

Yes, you can take a few steps back and get the same framing (FOV), but your depth will be different. Depth is what makes the photo look dynamic, it makes the subject pop out of the photo. This is why DX bokeh sometimes appears 'flat', and FX bokeh sometimes almost looks tilt-shifty.

Currently selling my 60d and a sigma 10-20 if anyone's interested. I'm road tripping the west coast right now and have decided to upgrade to full frame with the 6d, really looking forward to the wifi ability for uploading photos on the fly.
Shoot me a PM if anyone's interested in the lens or camera, they are both on eBay right now tho.
I'd love to pick up a sigma 35mm 1.4 next, sounds like a good walk around prime IMO.

Check my flickr and the tumblr link in my sig for lots of landscape photos from the road!

I had no idea the Windows Xp default background was a real photo. What might be the most viewed photo in the world ever? I think you could assume it is.

Here's the story told by the photog.

Poor shumck....probably sold the rights to it for $100 or something.

Reminds me of the "Yahoo!" voice guy. I think they paid $35 for that audio sample. (later on he tried to sue, don't think it went anywhere)

Or the "you got mail" guy (some of you won't know what I'm talking about)

                                Sucks to be a creative.
