with RAW you can take those underexposed shots and bring them back from the dead somewhat.

if you underexpose the photo and try to increase exposure during editing, you will introduce more noise

I start with white balance or exposure, then i usually increase the contrast, then go back and make sure the WB/exposure is still good.

the last thing i do is sharpen.

by the way, for you guys "just starting out" with photography, i highly recommend watching as many videos as you can done by Jared Polin on youtube.

Yeah pumping up the exposiure in editing will introduce noise but less with RAW than jpeg.
