Scott Brady of Overland Journal drives the Defender 420 miles across the Namibian desert. 10 minutes, but a well done video, and really shows how the truck behaves.

1700+ lbs of payload, 300+ on the roof, 8000 lb towing, 11 1/2" of clearance.
There are few automobiles that capture the attention of multiple generations, inspiring everyone from the Greatest Generation to the wonder-filled eyes of a five year old. The Defender has been that vehicle, and even the most die-hard Land Cruiser lover would secretly admit to the

I've often thought the Range Rover Classic would be a perfect truck if you could get rid of the electrical system and that damn injection system / engine management. Like - get a shell, gut it, and start over with a new 302 or Coyote or LS dropped in there.
With all the mods and swaps and stuff people are doing, I searched around and sure enough, people have been swapping in an LS motor - plenty of power, cleaner running, better mileage. And it's full circle GM since the Rover block is the Buick 215 from the 60s.
Plenty of room. It appears there are transfer case adapter plates out there.
Interesting how similar the basic RRC was to the original Bronco. I think the wheelbase is 100" and the Bronco was 92".

Nice one!
I stopped at a local oil change place to look at this one. Sold new in CA, somehow made its way to MT, and was sitting out in the sun in a field. He said the paint had faded to almost chalk color. Interior and seats were very nice.
1989.
30,000 miles.

Any LR news out there? I hear crickets. What's the story on Loren's shorty?
We had a good experience recently at Mid-Atlantic Rovers in Columbia MD. Old ones, new ones, they know what they're doing. The guy said their record for a customer LR3 is 470,000 miles. My son asked, How many times was the engine out? He said the valve covers have never some off. He said if you keep the cooling system in good shape, and oil in it, that Jaguar V8 will go and go.

Bringing this (and myself, apparently) back from the dead. Been a hot minute since I've been on here. e30 is still chillin.... been in "house mode" since i bought a place last year. Dragged this home last month:
I present to you the Disaster Transport. Looks prettier than she is.... kinda crusty underneath.... been in the midwest the past 10 years and it shows. Originally a west coast car. Also the lowest mileage vehicle I've ever owned at 95k. The local LR club out of Columbus created a Camel Trophy 'homage' event over the course of a weekend and I wanted to participate without destroying the P38 (177k and doing fine, btw). So - the Disaster Transport is the trail pig. First step was getting the Center Diff Lock un-stuck. Was able to use that as a bargaining tool to knock down the price some. Also the exhaust is only there in spirit. Some empty bean cans fixed that.
Never seen a vehicle with bolt-on shock towers before. It did make it easier...
2 inch lift and a Lucky8 bumper/winch combo and she's (mostly) good to go. Was hoping for tree sliders but they were 4+ weeks out...
Evening before at camp:
The 'Gatekeeper' - drove right out after finding a better line...
Bottom of the group obstacle - we were meant to tackle this one as a team. This being my second time doing any sort of real trails.... the one guy said i was white as a sheet going up!
Top of the hill!
Bonus round mud puddle. I gotta say for a month's work everything turned out fairly well. My only casualty was a busted tire sidewall on a rock. The D1 is a fun drive in its own quirky way.
