Basically, it looks faster, but isn't. Got a few of those in town here. Annoying as balls. Always tried racing my E30 and still always try racing my Neon. I remember a kid back in college that drove an Escort ZX2 with a fart can and had some japanese stickers on the side. He would say they have racing engines in them and that it sounded like a racecar, after saying his friends V6 Accord is a piece of shit. I really wish I could've had the chance to stomp his ass in that slushbox vert I had at the time...

I’m interested to know when it all started? I remember it was around 8th grade when my ears first heard the obnoxious exhaust notes paired with Eminem blasting thru their stereo systems worth more than the car itself. The combination of slim shady and the weedwacker exhaust at certain speed passing by is enough to make you think you where being attacked my some type of auditory weapon. The sound never seemed to match the speed of the car. Lot of noise not a lot of GO. It’s funny to because the guys with these rice cars actually believed they had “euros” lol

Honestly, I think a lot of it is the product of young, broke kids wanting to modify the cars that their parents gave them for their 16th bday, or that they bought after saving every $7.25/hr paycheck last summer.

So when you're starting with a car that wasn't really made to be modified or even remotely fast, the options are limited; which results in cars with shoddily welded on 'fart cans', stickers on stickers, cut springs, steel wheels, tow hooks, etc.

All of this is of course fueled by others on forums, IG and Fbook, that post "I added the WalMart XZ-278 muffler to my *insert random import car here* and it feels like 20hp more and the sound is amazing!"

I look at bad car mods the same way I look at stupid internet trends *eats tide pod* - people modify cars poorly because those shitty mods and trends have been made popular by forums and social media, so as long as the internet thinks a mod is worth while, the input from an actual mechanic or engineer is irrelevant.

Shit, when I was 17 I sprayed ~1/4 of a can of 'white lithium grease' on my M20's throttle body cable bc someone on bimmerforums said that would increase hp...what I did not catch was the internet sarcasm/trap for a young idiot like myself.

        Just my $.02

Ah, that backronym. My money is on it being invented by ricers, because it makes a pretty big assumption in the use of the word "enhancement"

I think fast and furious & gran turismo started ricers but I’m not saying they were ricers in that movie/game.

^Agreed. I really think rice is one of those things that's defined by the reasoning behind a modification. I also think the quality of the work is relevant.

I kind of was one at one point. Like jesus, I was modding a damn SUNFIRE. Now, I didn't put any REALLY gay shit on like a body kit (although I considered at a dark time in life). All I had was a soft flash chip and an aem cold air and sound system and subs and brakes and shit. The intake and the chip(probs not) actually DID help in the top end but was still stupid. I also was bored with graduation money and put a $40 underglow kit on it just for shits and giggles. I never did a hack job on my car though. I ALWAYS wanted to make sure it looked clean. Still to this day. Although, I don't really do too much fabricating on the Kneeon.

I generally feel that ricers are insecure about being unable to afford a proper car, and thus they inexpensively make their vehicles loud, both visually and audibly to compensate. Additionally, out of that insecurity they have a strong need to put down other vehicles and boast about their clearly unrealistic kills/wins/sweet drifts.

Yes, there are plenty of exceptions.

My 10 year is next week....but the muffler-less trend existed when I was I was in HS. So naturally I let my M20 scream for a few weeks.

Did the same a few years later with the S50, OBDII Headers and no cat....now that sounded amazing. My roommates could hear my heal toeing from 5th to 2nd when I was 1 mile away turning into our neighborhood. What a sound!

edit: sig pic is the muffler-less, S50'd e30 pulling out of our neighborhood in a 2nd gear, 5k RPM slide.
