in fact i looked it up and attached the airport diagram. judging by the way that storm is oriented, i would guess the winds are coming from the south south west. judging by the diagram, i would say he landed with a pretty good cross wind on runway 26. but again, i highly doubt it would have been more than 30 kts.

I always thought crosswind landings were fun, and aside from aerobatics landing on a windy turbulent day was my favorite part of flying. Shame I never got to take it to the "landing an airliner in the maximum rated crosswind" level.

I think they are fun too In a challenging way. Normally, I don't think about the up to 230 passengers in the back. Day in and day out, none of us spend any time thinking the outcome of a flight could turn out any different the text book way. However, when circumstances require you to push the airplane to it's limits, you can't help thinking a little bit about those 230 folks.

I used to fly cargo in old lear jets another lifetime ago. The addage is that boxes don't bitch. Some of the crazy shenanigans those guys would pull could make a salty sailor turn white.

It didn't take me very long to realize I was more suited to a different type of flying.

Damage in Barbuda, BVI, Cuba, and some of the Keys is really something.

However, I'm pretty tired of Parka Boy and Parka Girl on camera showing us yet another tree blown down and telling us "it's raining hard now." Must be hard to compete for those clicks eh?

The Weather Channel coverage is/was, as usual, juuuuust a bit too much. I had to change or mute the channel every time Stephanie Abrams came on. She's the Jacob Silj of weather people.

Watching Jim Cantore almost take a palm tree to the face was entertaining though.

Well Irma reminded the transplants and more forgetful Floridians that if one is headed for the state you should be getting ready, with that switch from an east coast track to west coast. We were preparing for the worst here and got lucky, I'm hearing that plenty on the west coast were preparing for remnants and got the horns. We're very lucky here that our power was only out from ~3:00 yesterday to mid evening so we have AC and a cold refrigerator. We don't have internet or TV and my mobile data connection is spotty at best now, but I'll take that since I was mentally prepared to be picking up the pieces and sweating my ass off trying to sleep wherever the air flow was best as I have done in the past.

I go full bore preparing for hurricanes, I fill the freezer and fridge with ice, buy an assload of of ramen noodles, have gallons of water on standby all year, I even get the bathtub ready to fill with water for cleaning and toilet flushing purposes. I feel like we might have actually been better off if florida got hit more than it did over the past 10 years, that long stretch of nothing built way too much complacency and the resultant rush on gasoline and supplies was ridiculous.

Truly though, we lucked out here in my little corner of the state, because there are trees down all over nearby and I can hear the generators running just down the street, and we came out unscathed aside from a minor roof leak.

man, i am really glad to hear that you are fine. i do agree with you about the complacency factor. we certainly had that here. fortunately, houston didn't get the winds you guys did. rockport got leveled, but at least the population is low there reducing the number of casualties.

Lots of trees down. Structures held their own with the exception of pool cages. The fact Naples was largely built after the implementation of the post Andrew building codes helped A LOT. Lost some ridge tiles on our roof, but that's about the extent of damage to most home in my neighborhood, unless a tree fell on your roof. We took a direct north east eye wall hit too. Power companies and the Governor have so far done a kick ass job. Some flooding in low areas that were already saturated. Most of the area has had 60+ inches of rain since June before Irma. In fact we had 20" during Harvey from a different low pressure system that sat over us. Been a crazy summer. Reminiscent of 04 and 05.

That's good news. Speaking of FPL, I drove by the South Florida fairgrounds on the way to work this morning and it was a sight to see. They're using the fairgrounds as a staging area for power contractors and there were more bucket trucks there than I have ever seen, and that's saying something because I saw the staging areas in 04 and 05. There was a row of them with lights on ready to go and I saw plenty on Southern Blvd headed towards the fairgrounds after a long night's work.

Parking lot at the Pompano Casino is also full of them. Seems there's just patches now without power. Sick of the cleanup, though. We lost tons of vegetation.

Had a quote today for $1900 in roof repairs from an uninsured, unlicensed roofer. No thank you I'll pass. Three of my neighbors are using him though. Still waiting on adjuster to look at it. Not expecting them to pay out anything but if we find leaks 6months down the road I want it to be documented. We applied for FEMA as its basically a free for all. However, we were denied since we have insurance. Punished for being responsible again. Crazy how much everyone relies and expects from the government. Literally people are not cutting trees and hanging limbs on private property so FEMA contractors will do it.

I was in the FL homeowner's insurance restoration business for some time before opening the shop full time (back in '03-'11 mold remediation was booming, and we had all those hurricanes in mid-'00's). Your homeowner's deductible is probably less than that pending your policy. FL roofs must be completely replaced if there's more than 30% of the total area being patched and insurance must cover the entire cost minus deductible. If less than 30%, you can repair it yourself, have a friend do it, or even hire a handyman (ie unlicensed contractor), no permits are needed, and nothing illegal about what your neighbors are doing - but it's buyer beware if it ever came down to court proceedings in the event something happens.

90% of the "unlicensed" aka/or "sub-contractors" out there will have liability at the least if they in fact have a legitimate business in the field, so if you do use someone like that, make sure their insurance company sends you a certificate of liability.

The codes may have changed a bit in the last couple years, but I always had the policy: If you pay for insurance, you have every right to use it.

My old house took an eye wall hit from Wilma. We just purchased, hadn't installed shutters at the time, news predicted cat1, few week old daughter, horizontal slider windows circa 1978, 15yr old shingles and tons of yard vegetation made for an interesting month.

the fema rules have changed a lot since we were hit by hurricane ike in 2008. they were shoving money up your ass in those days. now, i think the problem is that they don't have any money to give out. after harvey, i have talked to people that were denied because they didn't have insurance and people that were denied because they did. now that i think about it, i haven't heard of a single person who is supposedly eligible for funds....hmmm....

^Not sure what their rubric is for determining allocation of funds. Some peers of mine were cut checks and others not with similar circumstances. The application was a joke. No questions about specific expenses, costs, receipts etc. Just your income, and what was damaged, if you home was liveable, and if you are insured. I was rejected pretty much instantly. Not complaining just find it interesting. A friend was denied a free blue tarp because it was for a second home and not his primary residence. (didn't even know they gave out free tarps) They are huge tarps that must cost a fortune in reality. I bought $600 worth of tarps that total would have been 75% of the size they hand out. Luckily I didn't need them and returned them.

The costs of contractors is Crazy right now. I remember it being high after Charlie and Wilma, but this cleanup is on steroids. Tree companies are charging between $17k-$25k a day for crews of 10. That does not include vegetation removal. But golf courses and ultimately I assume insurance companies are paying it.

The roofer was a guy who basically used the storm as a opportunity to quit his roofing job to start his own. I think he was skilled, but no way anyone who doesn't have insurance and workers comp is going on my roof. I am sure I dont have enough initial visible damage to meet deductible, but just in case my felt has been comprimised by lifting tiles and screws I wanted to turn it in.

I remember Wilma well. At one point it was a cat 5 and might of even had lowest ever recorded bar pressure iirc. I was worried about that one, when it was in the gulf off of Mexico. The backside of the storm ended up being worse than the front side.
