I went to a Latino populated school. On Cinco De Mayo my buddy, who only had American flag shirts in some form or another. Was this stiring the shit storm? I'm not sure why so many Mexicans would be insulted. Who cares? The day's not about your flag or anything else. It's about celebrating your heritage. You're American. So celebrate. Use that liberty and freedom for Cinco De Mayo all you want. Getting bent out of shape because some kids, not the majority, wore some American flags is silly. Let's even say they were making a statement with wearing 'em. Again, who gives a flying fuck? It's already recognized on a national level by the American people and Government to be a "special" day to celebrate the Mexican/Latino Heritage. You want EVERYONE to have to agree with your "special" day? A day that doesn't even get you out of school? To go further than celebrating, is stupid. To make it into a "OH LOOK AT THE GRINGO WEARING THE AMERICAN FLAG ON OUR DAY!! LETS GET HIM!" hurts every Mexican/Latino's case in this country. Maybe, we should just be people and stop focusing EITHER direction on what the color of our skin is or the geography we've "originated" from.

The five of them wore American flag clothing and bandanas and sat together at the same table, I'm pretty sure it's safe to say it wasn't a total coincidence. And I don't believe your buddies entire wardrobe consisted of flags unless it was made up of 2 tshirts.

So many people are so quick to jump right to the extremes that they don't even bother reading or re-reading the article before digging in for a fight. The students were asked to change clothing because the administration was afraid of conflict or a fight breaking out. It has happened before, and it was for the safety of the students. It's not a matter of them "being offensive" or "breaking the rules," it's a matter of poor judgement based on the situation.

Just like you wouldn't parade into an Arsenal bar wearing a Manchester United jersey after a win. Can you? Sure, go ahead. Should you? Not if you value your legs. The VP was looking out for the best interest of the students; that's his job. He didn't punish them or suspend them or make them write an essay on why Mexico is awesome. He sent them home for the day because he decided there was a risk and he didn't want anyone getting hurt.

Now you can say "well there shouldn't be a risk because blah blah blah... respect the country.... AMERICA... deported..." but there is and everyone knows that. They're teenagers, they fight and do stupid shit all the time. It doesn't take much to start a mob when the energy is high.

That article confirmed exactly what the VP was afraid of. The Latino students became violent after the American students began waving flags. There was anger, shouting and unrest. It's precisely the reason that the 5 students were sent home in the first place, because the VP knew that this would happen and sure enough it did.
