Imagine how much could we do in the United States of America if we took 0.03% of our Annual Military budget and freed up Student Loan Debt.

Thats one TINY piece of the problem in OUR country that can be easily solved by rerouting money spent on "WARS" in other countries....

For Fiscal Year 2019 (FY2019), the Department of Defense' budget authority is approximately $693,058,000,000.[1] Approximately $684,985,000,000 is discretionary, approximately $8,081,000,000 is mandatory. The Department of Defense estimates that $652,225,000,000 will actually be spent (outlays)."

Student Loan Debt in 2017 = 1.7 Trillion

Id much rather that MY taxdollars that are TAKEN from me are spent in MY backyard, benefitting people here in the States. Why is that so difficult? Because the people at the top arent listening to the masses, they are listening to the people who line their pockets, other billionaires.

Imagine if students took responsibility for themselves or Universities were held responsible for offering worthless degrees instead of having tax payers float the bill for poor loan decisions by students.

Yeah, and how about those of us who worked hard to pay off our loans as soon as possible, guess we just screwed ourselves.

But the problem really is current and escalating educational costs. Even accounting for inflation, my cost for one year was about the same as it cost someone about the same age as my Mom to attend the same school for four years. Was my education somehow superior, doubtful.

^Thats because the govt got involved in underwriting loans. Also, students wrack up massive debt by living a pretty darn good life in college. Fine if you want to go the most expensive route, taking loan to cover living on campus, meal plan, books etc, but taxpayers sure as hell shouldn’t fit the bill. I did all basic courses at community college, transferred to major land grant University, worked to pay food rent and books and had a total loan of $13k upon graduation. I paid my own way and did it as economically as possible. It’s not that expensive if your smart about it. I pay more a year in daycare than my entire student loan.

Trust me, I feel for them too, but those who were able to pay them off likely werent paying through the nose. Ive already paid a good amount of stupid debt off from my dumb 20s (with no degree to show for it), but now Im paying 4x as much for a degree...

From the link I posted "The costs for a higher education are among the fastest-rising costs in American society today. Since 1980, tuition costs at public universities has risen from $2,119 to $9,410, a jump of 344%. Private college tuition is up from $9,500 in 1980 to $32,410 in 2017, a jump of 241%. By comparison, food and electricity costs have risen about 150% and gasoline prices have risen more than 200% over the same period of time."

If it was affordable, especially comparable to the other costs incurred, it would be fine, but thats not the case here. Regardless of the root of the problem, its a problem and it needs to be fixed

Freeing loan debt and medical debts sounds way too complicated. Like said above, what happens to the people who got good degrees, and or worked to pay off their debts? The only people who are going to win in that situation are people who got trash degrees, and people who are too lazy to hustle to pay off their debts.

I'm not for a platform that is based on handouts.

I'm okay with taxing the rich, spending less on wars, affordable healthcare, more affordable schoolng, spending money here rather than over there... who isn't? But what I'm not for is using tax money to save people with no accountability or self determination to change their current living situation and who blame the current system for their situation and the rest of the agenda that comes with socialist

The system they're talking about is a system that let my father, who came here with shit make a life for himself. So, all this whinny BS deferring accountability to 1% and this and that doesn't hold up for me.

My brother got a stupid degree, but he worked two jobs to pay it off, went back to school at UCI got a good degree, paid that off too and now has a decent job and is cruising. So, I don't feel sorry for people who don't put in the work to make a change for themselves, because it's 100% possible if you put in the work.

But hey, I see the appeal, vote for the guy who will pay off your loans and says these rich guys are the problem.

^^ A little dated— current numbers are even worse in regard to higher ed. and health care costs

The economy is rigged. The most critical life altering purchases are priced through the roof for average people; the things that don't matter keep getting cheaper. It'd be one thing if wages kept up with our core needs, but they haven't. That discrepancy is worse in the US than all the other major countries. The bottom half of workers in this country have basically the same relative wage as they did in 1973. It never kept up and it’s beyond sad.

The funny thing is that you guys think that either side of the political aisle is going to solve the rising cost of medical care or education. NOT. GOING. TO. HAPPEN. Bernie Sanders is just as likely to fail at it as Elizabeth Warren as is Joe Biden as is Donald Trump as is any other old white person they put in the White House.

I actually don't have as much a problem with the initial cost of going to college/university because I feel as though there are many ways to negate that cost through grants, charity handouts, work study programs, etc. I believe that young people need to understand the cost of the education and the value that they are receiving for that cost, forcing them to hopefully make decisions about their education that will benefit them in the working world. My problem is with the reality that these loans are subsidized by the government and they are at what I believe to be ridiculous interest rates. This is what kills young people, they are losing out on thousands of dollars that could otherwise be spent in their local economy strengthening their local community. This would allow young people to get into home ownership earlier, building equity that sets the foundation for their existence. There is no need for student loans to be at rates above prime rate + 1% for processing or servicing (which I think is still BS, but whatever). When I was paying off loans they were as high as 8% and people thought that was decent. BS. It doesn't need to be that way, and it's a crime that the government partakes in at the peril of its younger citizens.

As for medical care, that's all insurance companies and the rising cost of R&D for medicines. The two work in tandem to screw everyone else. Their massive profits speak to this reality louder than anything else.

The problem is that the system is broken and is driving a larger gap in between the haves and have nots. The success story of your father (and mine) is a story by those who say, "pull yourself up by the bootstraps and work your ass off like I did." Ok, if thats the case, lets allow the same opportunity. My education cost quite a bit more than it did when I went through it right out of high school.

I had scholarships that I earned, it still only covered a fraction of my costs. I will be able to pay it off, thats not what Im worried about. Its the fact that student loan is BY DESIGN an anchor that will prevent people from becoming more independent. I have a mortgage, 2 student loan payments, and thank God that I am not someone who needs to have a brand new BMW to show off my success so thats one less payment I have on a monthly basis. I will get it done, but I think the program itself is out of control. I paid over $100 for a book that was worth $7 4months later. Thats one piece of who they give it to you raw.

You can shit on my numbers (too many fuckin zeroes), but that just goes to show just how easy it is to solve one piece of the problem. That correction just proves that its an even SMALLER fraction of our WAR MONEY to fix the current anchor thats holding people back. YES TAX the rich. TAX the Corporation who make TRILLIONS and pay ZERO, but you take 1/3 of my money and spend it on something that doesnt mean shit to me. Im not saying to tax them to hell and back, but if Im giving up a 1/3 of my check (or a 1/4) why arent they doing the same? ... a problem if I ever heard of one

What corporation "makes" Trillions? Are you talking revenue? Profit? I just want to make sure I'm clear on what you are talking about. Is Apple evil for being the 2nd most profitable company behind Saudi Aramco? Have you stopped using Google and Amazon since they exploit the same tax loopholes you are mentioning?

I'll change it to one question, How much profit is too much profit? Is a flat number? Is it a % of gross revenue? A % of net revenue? Does it change based on region and industry?
