I'm leaning towards thinking it might be difference in shocks yes.
We put a late model valance on my brother's early model and wanted to keep the DB's, but it isn't looking right. Sticks a little further out.

Would DB's accept plastic bumper shocks? I don't have my car to test.Comment

Bumper shocks are definitely different Abby. I had to convert to plastic bumpers from DBs and, shocks was the 1 major difference. They are called DBs for a reason. Also fenders seem to line up a little higher on the early models, hence making the late valance look a little tweaked.@IRON-E30 aka Edwin:DComment

 Mtech1>Mtech2 just my .2

But Abby yes the shocks do differ once I put on a late model valance on my 88 vert the bumper stuck out about a 1/8-1/4 inch farther out.the late model valance stops the db from going further insigpic

Brian does not post much here so he may have missed your request. We will be at Bimmerfest so if you are bringing your M5 that would be a good time for Brian to check things out for you. I know enough to get into trouble so he would be a better person to answer your questions unless they are simple.

 Cheers,

Here's the real answer, although Turde was SO helpful! The 88 diving board use shocks specific to that year. They mount with a bolt through the bottom just like plastic bumpers. Totally different design than the 84-87 cars. The 88 diving boards also don't stick out as much as the earlier diving board cars.

Your brother should tuck his bumpers. It will look better. That's what I did on the eS I sold last year.
