Hey I'm an E30 noob, and bought my first. A 1990 325is that was converted to a 5 speed. I have been slowly doing the maintenance. My question is how easy is it to to the valve adjustment? Would you guys recommend a certain shop it just DYI? I live in Ventura county so a little isolated from the e30 hub...I called jmp Autowerks and they quoted $150 out the door... Is that a good price?

You can do the job yourself including the proper spring adjustment tool and feeler gauges for about $50. Watch a youtube video or two and you will get the idea. It's a job that seems a bit intimidating and subjective at first but it is very straightforward.


However, I would always recommend JMP. And if that price includes the valve cover gasket, I'd say that sounds about right price wise.

I'm planning on making it. Car runs decently now but I was told (and seems to me) that it's down on power lower in the rev range (2-3k rpm) and I think my fuel pump might go out on me. Should be fine for the cruise though

My car has a similar "issue" but I'm trying to reason whether the issue isn't really an issue because the car is just born with low power. Having said that, it's felt this way for a while, and I have recently replaced the fuel pump and filter, and no, those didn't change anything. Also replaced the cap & rotor recently. Nearly no noticeable difference, but good peace of mind. I'm thinking it's the MAF sensor. No I don't have vacuum leaks. But speaking of valve lash, maybe that could use some correction. A feeler gauge is pretty cheap, I've done it a number of times. Easy, just takes time and gentle hands.
