90-93 honda accord. dirt cheap. ultra reliable. i just drove to utah and back in one, over 1250miles, without a hitch on a car with the original motor and trans with over 320k miles. mines a 5-speed but the autos get comparable mileage. the autos have issues so make sure maintenance has been kept up and it should be solid.

E36 or E34 are excellent daily driver. I love my E34 525i manual, but had a few E36 325i manual cars and they were great. Just the right amount of power for a daily and comfy, too. How about a 318i 4 door for $2,000? New head gasket, fairly straight but nothing you'd worry about bumping into something during the snow months.
