superstition, i've used plenty of VR valve cover, lower/upper oil pan, timing case no issues. 99% of the time its user error

Nope, just extra cautious. It would be super fucking awesome if this motor didn't have any leaks when I'm done!

Who has had a bad VR gasket?

Brad has a failing VC gasket. Obviously, Simon's head gasket failed. There's definitely a plethora of others who've used VR with issues and some who haven't had anything. I suppose it's all hit and miss, but I'd really rather not take the risk.

Ive read a ton of threads about VR headgaskets failing within 10k miles. I guess Im lucky mine has lasted 20k. I dont doubt user error but when the majority of the stories are about VR headgaskets and zero are about Goetze, I'll go with Goetze. I've built several engines and they havent failed. I plan on doing this one right. And for the record, I dont put any blame on Ben for doing it wrong, just using the wrong gasket.

VR are shit, on almost any car. We had problems with them at the VW shop I used to work at.

Is a metric wheel going to work with that big old tire on it? What are you looking to put it on?
