No I am not parting out the car, just redoing the front suspension.

this^^...and a shit ton of PB blaster. If you can, let the strut housing sit with the pb blaster in it for like a week. Keep spraying the area down every day.

I see a neverending project in your future. I think it would be easier to fix your issues on the current motor than swapping it again...

            This is what I expected:

The entire yellow sleeve for the strut insert is still jammed inside my strut tower.
Can you see the insert in there?

Yes - Though my mechanic has them right now. Originally I pulled the strut insert out, and realized there was a 1" collar that I was not able to get out, so I took it to Prova to have them pull out. I also was not able to remove the driver side insert at all, so took it to them to remove that one as well. I thought these were Bilstein struts, so was surprised the passenger side insert did not have any yellow sleeve or any markings on them - it all makes more sense now.

It was after he got the 1" collar out, and the driver side insert out that it became clear the passenger side actually was still retaining the entire insert. Which you can see in this photo - the 1" tall collar has nested inside the yellow Bilstein sleeve, which you can just barely see at the end of the threads.

I gave Prova a call this morning and asked them to take off the tie-rod mount to see if there is a hole in the bottom of the strut housing - hoping they will be able to stick a rod through it to try to hammer out the insert. Anyone know off the top of your head if the strut housing is drilled at the bottom?

Short of that, I asked him to try bending a portion of the insert with a chisel enough to get a pair of vice grips on it, but it being up against the threads is a bit worrying.

Also, these things are packed full of dirt/mud - I don't even know how that happens. No wonder this car felt like the struts were locked solid, they probably were.

yeah, the bottom of the strut fills with water. It's a 'feature' of the reverse strut design...

Let me know if you really do want to go that route. I've probably got all the stuff to do it, and we could make work a deal out. I'd be interested possibly in the 24v stuff for the new project I am working on this winter.

I've got a nice 90,000 mile m20 all maintenance done 10k ago. Austin's getting all my 24v junk for the use of him and his shop. I'm sure he'll be selling the stuff off.
