unless it was tuned for that maf and you don't go FI, you won't see any gains, and could actually cause trouble for you.

mafs work by heating and testing resistance of a wire suspended in your air intake. increasing the diameter of the intake tube decreases total air that is passing over the maf, decreasing it's thermal transference to the atmospheric air, changing the resistance and therefore readings compared to a smaller tube intake.

it's unlikely that the larger maf was the soul cause of the insane afr readings, but it's not like it helped..

I still don't understand how a 3.5" MAF will gain any power when the throttle plate is only 3".

I mean, if BMW could have made another 10-20hp by just changing the size of the intake and not causing problems, why didn't they?

also, larger MAFs are subject to turbulence issues. Part of the reason the E46 M3 CSL doesn't use one..

        Could this be a reason?
Dude, mine does this too ATM (instant, noticeable loss of power above ~6300, VSS not hooked up) and I'd say this is very likely your issue (I've searched, it's a thing). Fix this before you worry about anything else.

From what I understand (hearsay) it's not to alleviate restriction, but actually to more accurately meter the air at higher rpm.

its more important to meter air at low rpm IMO. at WOT you can have a pretty dumb system that can work out the fuel and timing required

having said that the S50B32 uses the same size MAF? works pretty good.

it would not be a wise move to give that thing heaps on the track past 6k, unlikely to do any damage on the street though, probably too lean to hurt anything lol but the tune might not be that great so timing could be poor as well

Problem seems to be losing resolution at high RPM's with the Motronic.

I was unable to get the AFR's correct up high due to only have a few values to work with, but here's a live tune from today. Red is a mail order shelf tune, blue is after a few hours.

More so when there's a bad tuner behind the laptop :p
