sure, can be done.
give me complete M54b30 car, and about 2 months...... it would NOT be cheap.
CAli bar requirements requires the replacement engine to be used with its factory DME and full emissions control ; complete OBD2 with its full evap system would need to be installed.
S52 converted to OBD1 is NOT cali smog legal. Most definately not bar legal at all
if you want to "pass" smog, there are ways to "pass".OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25

similar yes, but BAR legal - NO.
no engine can be swapped and pass bar legitimately unless its original DME and full emissions system is also installed with it.
Legitimate pass and "pass" are different things, I would prefer to be 100% by the rules if playing that game.
if goal is bar legal, stuff in entire M50. easier to tweak for top end power as well- better for boosting....etcOBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25

Just run an m50 intake manifold on it, and the person doing the bar test will have no clue. Pass it off as an M50 by switching to an OBD1 valve cover. :pCheck out Undr8d Empire on Facebook: www.facebook.com/Undr8dEmpireLlc

word on the street is that Single vanos can be bolted on to the m54 head, and it might actually work - this would be an interesting way to get an ALU motor;l
get M54b30 +S52 valvetrain and single vanos+headers+ some hybrid intake manifold and m44 CPS and OBD1 everything.....
but you would loose dual vanos.OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25

Even the intake mani's between the M50 and 54 look similar. I am guessing swapping to a single vanos head wouldn't matter too much since I think Hovering isn't controlling his exhaust vanos. I wouldn't boost an M50 either since that wouldn't pass smog anyways.CCW- when every second counts... The police are just minutes away!

so then I can just buy a M54b30 and bolt on S52 cams and towers and headers and intake and have cheap plentiful ALU motor. damm
cps sensor bolts on as well, is there a place for the crank position sensor to also go on m54 head? im guessing yes? or no port there for it-OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25

Here's what my actual emission looked like with OBD2 cats:
............. HC (ppm).. .....CO(%).. CO+CO2(%)........ O2(%)
limit............ 150........... 1................ 6................ n/a
cruise...........54......... .08 ............14.88............. .25
limit............. 220......... 1.2............... 6................ n/a
idle.............. 64 ........ .01 ...... .... 13.81 ........... 1.58
A suprising amount of the m50 stuff bolts to the M54. I'm using S50B32 exhaust manifolds.
Don't know about S52 cams, but I doubt they would fit as the head is not interchangeable at all.
You can put the crank sensor on the head but it won't do much good...
