What oil do you use?

I stopped by Autozone today and they have 5 qts if Mobil 1 15-50 for $33 including a Bosch filter. Killer deal good thru 9/23

Better than regular, thicker than synthetic

Has ZDDP additives that our worn out cams need, rated close to what m20s seem to like running (15w50+)



Don't worry about it being diesel oil; I know modded Supra guys that run it and swear by the stuff

I myself have been switching brands, castrol is baseline ran well Dino 20w-50, vr1 ran really well excellent for hotter months Dino 20w-40, diesel oil is good for all around currently on valveoline premium blue Dino 15w-40. I'll definitely stick with diesel oils, be cautious for hotter months I had this stuff in 100+ weather temp gauge sat way higher then with 20-50 vr1. It stuck around half a tad below it, a little scary. I did notice valve tick was at a minimum with vr1, but did turn black rather quick approx. 1500 I switched it out for premium blue.

the irony is a 15w40 is probably too thin for an M20, especially when it gets hot.

Bogging etc. is unlikely to be related to the oil you used.

meanwhile, I'll continue to trust the oil that has worked in an M20 for 1,000,000 miles, and in my own since it was 300 miles old. :p

it probably depends where it is driven and how hard. on a hot day at the track for sure 40 would be most likely a bit too thin. i wonder if just looking at oil temp and pressure on a VDO gauge or similar is a good method to tell you if you are running a suitable weight?

I use a high mileage 5w30 or high mileage 10w30 depending on the time of year. I feel unless your boosted or use it for track purposes you will never reap the benefits of synthetic oil.
I tried synthetic but the same thing would happen that did to you, tiny oil spots would appear on the driveway but with regular there would be nothing.
I like the high mileage oil for these motors, or anything above 100k for that matter. The properties in the high mileage oils is made to swell up any deteriorating seals. Nothing major at all but makes just enough difference.
I usually use valvoline, castrol or shell. Mostly bc you can almost always get a good deal on 5 qts and a filter at pep boys or autozone haha gotta save where you can.
P.S. Would not recommend royal purple.

I run Castrol GTX 10w40 in the winter, 20w50 in the summer, for the same reasons as everyone else.

The iX is getting Shell Rotella T6 5w40 this winter, since I would rather run a synthetic with the turbo, and while it probably isn't a real synthetic, it is hopefully close enough

Motul synergie 15w-50 synthetic and napa gold filters. Went 6000 miles on last change including 3000 mile road trip. Did not burn a single drop. Stick still had just over full day i changed it. No leaks on syn either. Cars got 131xxx now.

Edit: it may have been 300v the last time. Cant remember which was on the shelf. We stock it at shop but im pretty much only person that uses it.

I just put Castrol 20w-50 in mine. But Im thinking of going to Mobil 1 full synth. The Mobil 1 site recommends the 0w-40 Euro for my 88 325i, (which it also recommends and is what I put in my '03 540iT), but everyone here says to run the 15w-50. Is Mobil 1 wrong?

Whats your climate? Generally speaking that oil is to thing unless you live in north dakota or alaska and then only use that during winter. Our cars call for 20w-50. Many synths come in 15w-50 which is acceptable.

ZDDP in the 0w40 is too low for an M20. low ZDDP = trashed cam lobes.

the next closest thing would be 5w40 turbodiesel truck, which likely has enough ZDDP, but it's not cheap.

BMW now recommends the same oil no matter what engine you have, pretty much. also, they suddenly started doing things like 15k oil changes and "lifetime" fluids. coincidently, at about the same time they started paying for all the maintenance on new cars. Think about it.
