that will have zero effect on cracking under the cam bearings.

i run a colder t-stat as aluminum doesn't like heat and fatigue loads so i'm hoping this provides some benefit as my temps are normally at the 11'oclock tick except hot days with AC in traffic , i wonder what coolant pressures are in the head. BMW did raise the cap bleed off pressure at some point but that may not affect the actual operating pressures in normal circumstances.

the most likely thing is differential thermal exapansion or some manufacture casting, cooling and heat treating process that causes poor microstructure

I thought they lowered the pressure with a 1.4 bar cap. It was what, 2bar before that recall? It had something to do with heater core failures iirc, and I doubt the lower boiling point does anything good for the engine.

AFAIK they went 1.2 to 1.4b from 87 onwards cars. they may have started with 2b though and changed it. i was thinking about why the 731 and 200 heads seemed to crack less by all reports and saw that. i have a cracked 731 here though

Replacement head has been machined and is on the bench. Between this and the other e30 being ready for the 14hr race in Atlanta, Murphy's Law is in full effect.

Availability and timing. Wanted to use the 36lb foggers but they didn't pass the flow tests, so went with the 24's we had on hand.

Epic thread! Just the kind of motivation I needed as I'm planning my m20 build...

Just happen to see this finally. Not much to update :(

We found more flow from the 885 heads, and wanted to go with the new IE 284 cam to get a few more ponies, but the owner had his second child recently (at 46yrs old at that). So, he decided to put the car up for sale and buy a more manageable street/track car to avoid having to trailer this one to/from the track.

It was hitting top speed at Daytona, and having to feather it with the needle buried at 7000rpm with the 4.10 and 225/50-15 slicks. With a larger cam and 3.73, this thing would be even crazier. He went with GC coils, BBK, and stripped the car down to 2400lb sans driver.

Just finished going through this thread and I remember seeing this car for sale not too long ago...

What were the specs to get it to 2.8L?

I definitely want cast pistons and not forged. I don’t want to deal with constant oil burning... I wonder how much the OEM pistons cost. Wish I had just bought the 85mm Mahle Pistons when I had the chance to pay under a grand for them

forged pistons do not burn oil unless something is done incorrectly or the wrong parts are used.

OE pistons are expensive, though you should be able to find a new set cheaper than a forged set if you shop around. then you have to go and modify a brand new set to make them fit

Car is still running strong. Met with the owner at the Daytona race since he lives a few blocks from the track. Didn't have a camera it phone in me, but the cage was cut out, glass reinstalled, along with a super mint interior. He keeps telling me he wants the car to come back for a bigger cam and the better techniques we have for head flow, but is hesitant since the car runs and drives so great as it is. Says it starts instantly every time, and turned heads everywhere he goes.
