E34s are the beginning of the end for my relationship with BMWs. Maintenance be damned, the HVAC controls in the E34 are a mess to diagnose with a number of revisions so it's difficult to find any good information, and the board is epoxy coated so it's basically impossible to repair. Maintenance isn't going to stop them from failing each one is a time bomb. The fact that there's no base model manual unit like what is in the E30 that you can upgrade to to get rid of the malfunctioning junk has caused me a lot of frustration. Then there's the hatch wiring, the door brakes ripping out of the doors, the crappiest possible door cards, the internal door mechanism failure mode that leaves the door stuck shut inside and out so you have to pray you don't wreck said crappiest possible door card trying to get the door to open, window regulator clamps pulling off the window glass, dealing with the window trim to get the glass in and out, the total dogshit quality wiper mechanism, the cars burning down because the HVAC box design funnels debris into the blower resistor...

If anything, if an FD owner tells you a car is flawed you should take it more seriously. That's a person willing to put up with some serious flaws.

hahaha I have an N18 Mini and it's almost as bad, but I haven't had any catastrophic engine issues, just the annoying turbo BMW things like worn wastegates/OFH gaskets/chassis stuff.
I think there are two huge factors with these: Super long oil change intervals, and a dipstick that is impossible to read.
Small/Light car + turbo + 6speed is a fun combo, so it's been ok so far.

Varg is really not selling me on the E34 touring life though...

I bought a high-mileage E39 wagon a few years back as my DD while I do a refresh on my E30. It's had a quite a few issues, but nothing that has left me stranded. Nothing really unexpected with a car over 200k.

I can't stand these automatics either. The only thing that makes it tolerable is the sport and manual modes. I'd love to put a 3L MT drivetrain in it in the future.

P.S. Facebook is cancer. I just use it for the marketplace since forums and craigslist are dead, but 90%+ of my interactions with people have been horrible.

The ONE interaction EVERYONE on Facebook needs to have is to send Mr James Crivellone a message urging him to improve R3V... the errors are so annoying...

I recommend getting a knife and cutting slits in the dipstick so you can read it.

                      Worst dipstick ever made lol.

haha you said that on the second post of my thread, and I basically did -

Still a pain in the ass though, I have to basically ream out the tube with the dipstick and wipe it ~10 times before I get a semi-clear reading.
More alarming - Even though it measured at the halfway mark, way too little oil came out when I changed it last, so once it's back on the ground I'm going to treat it as though anything below the top bulb is low.
