Is it leaving power on the table, or just increasing lag?

Both. Something that flows and scavenges poorly NA will flow and scavenge poorly with a turbo on it, the only difference is the exhaust volume and the pressure, it's still a fluid. You can't fit a perfect solution in an E30's engine bay but you can do better than that with the space available. E30s are a great platform for mods in general but they're really kinda crap as a platform to turbocharge, they weren't designed with it in mind so space is very limited and makes fitting a good intake/exhaust manifold and effective intercooling difficult. An M20 and its drivetrain can take boost well but that's really about where it ends for E30s being a good platform for doing so. Everyone is leaving power on the table, this guy just made a point of leaving a lot of it.

might not be that far off. it would be perfect for a guy wanting to do a swaped m3. maybe it could be bought for 16-18k? flyboyx has an s62 and a g420 laying around....just sayin'....

Seems a little ambitious on this one. $40k turbo wagon? Wheels are terrible, but that's subjective. Turbo m20 really that expensive, even at that level? It doesn't have AC so not worth more than $10000 to me...

You know, you used to be able to purchase lightly filtered used oil at gas stations or auto shops as bulk oil.

Let's be real, plenty of quick lube spots used repurposed oil too, so there must be some ultra cheapass market for it.
