The other thing to think about:

It might be fixable, but that might be the hard road to take. Once you unbolt everything it might be easier to just swap all the good stuff into a new chassis. Find a clean 318is for cheap, and do it all again with more knowledge.

It looks pretty fucked, but it the doors close ok, it might be salvageable.

Everyone lies. It's the one thing you can say of anyone and always be right. Plus the damage doesn't agree with not going fast IMO and his own account of not stopping in time because there isn't ABS indicates that he definitely did not know the car very well. I'm a curmudgeon though, and you're an optimist, so I'll leave it at that.

Honestly, if he did phuck up, it sounds like he is more than willing to pay for it/make it right. That's sometimes hard to find in "friends", and I can see why you don't want this to get in the way..

Get it fixed and move on.

I speak from being on the other side, totaled a friends race car early this season during a race and made every effort to make it right with him again. Mistakes happen, nobody is immune..


That all being said, try to avoid getting your insurance involved - they are NOT your friend (despite what the commercials try to lead you to believe..)

That's a shame man. Hopefully it's just a bunch of replaceable bits. Otherwise, you have a big head start on building out a clean shell.

Judging by how much each front wheel is pushed back plus the buckled fenders, I'd be surprised if your front subframe hasn't moved a bunch. I'm thinking the frame rails are bent, certainly in front of the subframe and likely behind it wh means the guesses about your floor pan could be accurate. Has the steering wheel moved ?

I'd be very surprised if that could ever be roadworthy.

Really how I am feeling today. I have found another shell that I would love to swap everything over to, but thats so much time that I dont really have right now.

If you have the space to store your current car, that's what I would do.

Get a clean shell decent runner and just swap as much working stuff over as you need to make it reliable, then plan the motor swap and knock it out as you go.

Looks like either the control arms where pushed into the floor or the bolts snapped off and spared you a lot of work. If they're just snapped should be an easy fix. Can't see there being damage with the subframe but the strut towers are probably bent a little anyway. Probably doable if u have the means to fix it and are knowledge and have the time.

Take all the fucked up bits off first before you do anything. Look at inner fenders, strut towers/welds/subframe& attaching places for any sort of stress/cracks/buckling. I wouldn't be surprised if you made it out with new front end/suspension bits. If your shell is in decent shape otherwise, it's worth it. I'd be worried if he didn't turn the engine off right away though.

My guess is the arms just folded in. I had similar damage when I got ran off the road a few years ago. I changed the front subframe, control arm, strut, tie rod, wheel/tire, etc and it was fine. It was a fucking pain in the ass to get the new front subframe to line up with the dowels though, I will say that.

I'm guessing you've got similar damage. At any rate, I don't think it's totaled. Will take a little bit to make right. At least your friend owned his fuck up and is willing to pay for it. Not many people will do that these days.
