More progress on the black car. The cooling has been the last real issue I have faced in the swap. I had hopes that the small radiator that I mounted within the core support would be able to keep up with my cooling needs but this summer it seemed to struggle a little. Also I was not happy at how close the radiator was to the front of the engine. This required custom radiator hoses. I looked into having silicone ones made up but at the cost of almost a grand to have the two made, I decided to make my own which were rather ghetto rigged. After blowing out a radiator hose I decided "F**k it" Ill make a new solution out of 1/2" schedule 40 pipe.




So much more room and I can use the stock s38b36 radiator hoses. Mishimoto M20/M50 radiator.

Happy with first tests. Temp stayed around 180F even at low speed.

You should grab the mishimoto/ebay 3 core Z3M rad, then you could say goodbye to cooling issues.

Productive week. Built an exhaust for my friends M54 swapped e30, worked on the front end of the s38 car and finished up the RS restore.



Mounted a 16" Spal puller behind the radiator. So far seems to be working very well.

The wheels ready for assembly. So please with how well they cleaned up. About 40 hours of my time scrubbing and polishing and about 350 dollars to get to this point.

Center nuts cleaned up nicely as well. 72mm

New meat. Very hard to find sizes that i wanted in 16" Tried to get tires with similar characteristics. So far so please with how well this combo has worked. Car grips the road so well.
fronts: 225/45R-16 Dunlop Direzza ZII Star Spec
rears: 245/45R-16 Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 SL

Finally the wheels were put back together. Ive read people telling different ways to assemble these 3 piece wheels. Some call for putting the silicone on after torquing and some recommended torques as high as 44ft.lbs. I laid on a layer so silicone on each side. Put the 3 pieces together, then hand tightened all the bolts. First going to 15ft.lbs in a star pattern so it was tightened evenly. Finished up at about 25ft.lbs for the second pass. Thread locker used on the bolts.

The B35 waterpump saves some space and weight vs. the B36 unit, but looks like it doesn't recirculate during warmup.

i like the cooling solution..

just one thing.. i would really recommend that you isolate the intake filter.. for heat

here is a picture of how i did it..



the oem airbox was heated underneath ,, because of the ABS unit,,, and i had to cut of the intake hose.. but there is some difference between B38 and B36 intake lengt,, incl MAF

it have been proofed many times ,,that NOTHING beats the oem intake box..

I had looked at R888s. They are a step up in performance from the Dunlop and bridgestones but I wanted to have a tire that would last a little too. Not a pencil eraser.

After a work out the bugs i plan to run something like that. unfortunately I don't have a stock airbox lying a round so ill have to fab something.

It should recirculate through the engine until the t-stat opens? Yes there is quite a difference in size. I guess if I had decided to run the B35 cooling system to save the space I would have considered it but I'm glad the B36 fits as well as it does




Everyone has a story on how they got into these cars. Were going to go back to 2008 for a minute. I'm 19 and going into my sophomore year of college which means I'm now able to have a car on campus. My dad tells me a coworker is looking to clear out his lot and has "an old bmw" he is looking to give away. I was sure it was a beater but I was still overwellmed with excitement. So a few days later we went to his lot and there on 4 flat tires sat this heap.

Amazingly the tires held air and the battery was able to be jumped. The m10 came to life after who knows how long at rest. Now at the time I had no idea how to drive manual trans so my dad had to drive it home.

I wish I could say that when we got it home I mastered driving manual and I was able to fix up the car. Unfortunately the rust was so severe my dad told me there was no way I could use this car to get back and forth from school. To give you an idea I remember the carpet was the only thing keeping your foot from hitting pavement while you drove. A month later it went back to the lot and I bought a $750 91' accord. I never forgot about that car and a year later I sold the accord and used all the money I made interning to buy the 89 325is. That's how it all started.
