Got most of it done today, forgot to bring home the tool to refit the hubs without damaging the wheel bearings so the driveshafts and hubs will have to wait for now.

Hubs have been out back in along with the driveshafts and the diff fluid.

The rest of the items will be put in/adjusted tomorrow. Should be off the stands by the end of the weekend anyway.

Freezing the hubs in my chest freezer worked a charm too.

Great swap. Awesome looking car, too.

That is the one David Towe owns. Jim Richards still owns his championship car (and his championship E24). The stock arms are 99% likely due to rules mandating stock arms vs the much freer DTM regulations.

              Thanks Iain.

Yeah i have since found out about those rules. Quite a few differences in all of the E30 M3's out here in Australia that have raced.

What is the latest with this project?

The car is now legally engineered in the state of Victoria! (no easy task here trust me)

                RWC and registration to follow.

                Rapt.

Love this car! Something about a reliable hi-revving 4 banger. Congrats on getting it legal. Im building an aluminum M52 and when it gets swapped in, Im going to have a fun time trying to make it legit. All part of the fun, right??

                    Thanks mate.

What are the rules like in your state of America with regards to engine swaps? Or does it solely revolve around the emissions (smog) side of things?

In California the emissions is really strict since the air quality is terrible. Motor must be from the same manufacturer and must be newer than the vehicle itself. You also have to have all the emissions equipment from the donor car. My M52 is an OBD2 car, but Im going to tell them its a M50 OBD1 car and I have all the emissions equipment to support that. My 84 needs a little more work though since I also need a working CEL

Unless they changed the law, it doesn't have to be the same manufacturer. Last year modified magazine did an LS swap into a 240 and showed how to get it BAR'd.

The car was registered today (hence the high ride height)

The car is 100% legal and i drove the pants off it today, very happy with the results.

Most other places in the states don't give a crap about engine swaps. Any cars that came pre OBD1 only have to pass a sniffer test and a gas cap test. That is, if the county even requires emissions testing. Many counties don't even have safety inspections

You guys are lucky about your relaxed laws.

Things that you have over there like Hot rod's drag week and being able to drive those cars on the road is only a pipe dream for us here.

Our inspection in Kansas isn't even required unless you're trying to register a car you bought from another state. If so, all you have to do is drive into a bay, they look at the vin on the dash and the vin on the title, you pay $15 and leave.
