    Progress, Flat out

Things have been super busy and I don't think I was in the ind set to capture it all.
But we did leave off with an almost done motor.

Excitingly the cam timing blocks would have put the timing right as the cam card says 105 intake / 105 Exhaust

Drop that pressurize on the vanos

    Solid 8,5 travel

    Install pump

Primed the engine, used a drill with and old chain cogg

Break your timing cover if you use supplied bolts, cut them down...TOOO LONG

I've seen people toss belts off due to clearance here. well see what happens.

The bolt I realized didn't have a saftey wire hole, I should have removed and drilled.. But I didn't. Ill probably take it apart later and do so...I also added a washer in their, just felt right. class 10

    Ready to drop in!

    Hello

    Balanced FX racing chromoly flywheel

    Clutch masters FX350

Used my Greece passenger side door seal that I haven't got around to for a radiator seal, worked quite good!

    Getting closer

    Worked on some PCV fittings

This job was a doosy but doable.

Although it came up, the rustoleum was originally for a direction and to easily get color down. it was a lot of work to prep the floor for paint, but must needed. Oil based paints don/t ever dry or work with automotive grade paints, Period.

    Cont prep for painting.

    April 2022 AKA E30 Month

Progress? E30 Month continues, not as much progress as id like. Need more E30 in E30 month and less work.. but will manage.. life.

Valves are adjusted, took longer than I wanted too and a bag of shims were wrong so I had to shave them down a bit more then expected. Got to tired and had to finish up the next day.

Valve adjustment DONE! hopefully I wont have to do that for a while. All valves are .007 - .008 or .2MM Lash

No vanos in hand yet, but well get started

Just getting ready, nothing set yet.

While waiting on the other parts I decided to reseal and replace the detents in the gearbox. I didn't have 5th gear lean, but felt like it was too easy to leaning that way. Nylon pivot pin FTW. If you know you know.

I'm not in love with the farmer black paint job, actually its cringe worthy... but I'm not going to it change RN.

    Future Teaser.

Hope to be running this weekend!

726 cage looks amazing. work of art!

Lots of awesome upgrades. throttle pedal is beautiful!! brake booster reinforcement is SMART. its paper thin hymn there. Shock tower - man i was contemplating redrilling to e36 bolt pattern for more caster with slr plates configured to e36 bolt pattern. I think my caster up front is R/7.52 L/7.76 according to my last alignment - and that was the target so i've been content for now.

I've seen conflicting information, a couple of pictures online and some hearsay. They don't show up in realoem on any US market pre-S54 engine that I can find (M30 and S38 have it but not the same part), only euro S50.

Thank you. Cant wait to use the accelerator pedal again. Caveat Emptor.

Early Non vanos engines had them I believe, but they don't ever show in ETK. The Kit I got from Hack Engineering, it has a drill Jig and hardware, I had to shim it on the back side, but looks like itll work well. Online I seen them in many different places along with the VW tensioner setup. Did euro M50/2 engines have Oil pump tensioners?

We have this open table theory. Any open table will get filled, good luck! :)

    April 2022

Progress? Yes I like to call this E30 Month.

    Lots of things coming together!

Strut towers reinforcement complete - E36M effort for 7.5 deg castor

Dual sheer clevis welded up on top of the inner ball joint reinforcements.

A big washer setup for Inner ball joint reinforcements for the top side of the boss

I hate to powder coat again, so we paint. Lucky I have some RAL paint to match, Finished product later

    Things coming along

I've destroyed 4 Genuine and 4 AKG plastic bushings... The bore on the pedals was about .008 too small. And good timing, when picking up my motor the machine shop had some time to ream out my pedal bores for a perfect press fit of the bronze bushings, I had to shave them down later to fit into the box, but wasn't much. Super Stoked!

    Click to play

    MF'N SUCCESS!

    HELL YAH

    Upgraded swing arm bolt

New orings swapped out, and lines final fitted,

New firewall grommet swapped inside out to give more clearance in the engine bay for S54 Airbox

    Buy them while you can!

Fresh brake switch, and everything seems to be fitting as planned!

    Whammo!

Right.. I use a thin bead around the booster. Sometimes this stuff is a lot of work.

When I got the dead pedal I though it wasnt going to fit and be tough to mount.. I think I had it installed in a 1.5h with flange button head screws epoxied from the backside. Turned out better than expected.

    And finally

    Don't forget

    Courteous height

I got to use my buddies Magical Vapor Honing Machine on my timing cover!

    OK NOW ready for assembly

    Fresh

Note: S54 Oil pump chain tensioner via Hack Engineering drill guide

Had to shim Oil pump tensioner and wanted to confirm fitment before sealing the deal

    Cover and non damaged damper

Yah, I lube my washers, so what

    Got sum head

Cams, Trays, lifter bores, rod bearings, and main bearing are all WPC treated

Crank 45* Retard, Cams loosely in. Waiting on some lash caps to finish up valve adjustment.

And this thing showed up?! W8 M8

And got some pieces to get painted to test colors and see if the Rust Oleum reacts to the new Burgundy V2.0

    WORK.

Believe it or not, the floor is complete.

Finished up and MCS 2WR install

    E30 punch list:
Engine: Finish Valve ADJ, Oil pump, Vanos, Set timing, OFH, Prime, Mount arms,
    Fit roll bar
    Bleed brakes
    Detent kit on trans
    Install engine trans
    Break in / Dyno tune.
    Fit new tires
    Paint roll bar and interior
My Y pipe is shipping back from swaintech today! Stoked.
Hoffmeister kink bushings - Recheck water leak
Re assemble interior - No Ninestich redo panels...
Find replacement screws for Leogrand racing trim covers

    March 2022

    Prog Cont

    Another March Update. Ok, ALRIGHT!

Motor is at the machine shop ready for pickup, I am just waiting on time to pick it up. Hope this Friday.
Whats is left on engine... Vac High volume pump, Vac Single vanos rebuild. Going to see if their vanos is any quieter than what I can do. After 10k miles it got just slightly noisy, which is common for big cam'd solid lifter cars.
And Vapor blast timing cover, will drop off Friday. Also not the S54 oil pump isn't geared the same on the S50/2, So they machine the cavity to fit same size pump set internally. More volume for S54, same volume for S50/2 just better oil control. Hope should have my Y pipe back form swaintech soon!

As seen in MEMEBERS RIDES - I think I fainted.

I did get the strut towers reinforced. I think this should work for more than a few years while harsh track use, The tower its self will probably pull apart from the chassis before the tower cracks

Garage 54 - Looking pretty good fellas. You can also see I added a stud at one of the original mounting locations so I still can get that purchase onto the strut bar. M10

Finally getting to last weekends goal, get everything prepped and into primer. Ended taking the steering shaft out which went quick.

And I removed these things.. .TBC

    PLUGGED

Tidied up the battery tray removal

Man this is a a lot of work

    Slated

    And Sealed

Got started on reinforcing the ball joint boss's in the subframe, which will have the MRT DTM inner clevis welded to. Thought it would be a good time to do it all at once. in prog

Hopefully will have finish welded today.

Got some goodies back from powdercoating!

Got some upgraded bolts while there 12.9, Nope to use the one with longest shank length and cut the end of the threads off. I would have together but looks like I have early pedal set and the AKG bushings don't fit. AND I cant find my Genuine ones I ordered. Hope the reordered ones will be here today!

    Short term punch list:
    Get timing cover vapor blasted
Measure out valve lash caps and check lash for taller caps - ORDER ASAP
Do spray out on test material for roll bar color and floor respray
    Assemble engine
    Finish sub frame - TODAY?!
    Install dead pedal

    Not as Short List:
Fit new Falken 245/40R17s - Almost forgot

And good news, I did get the color code from that Burgundy / Maroon of the car posted above! My roll bar should ship out today!

Next month is E30 month for me. I I think were on good track for At The Vintage 2022.

I enjoy this thread. That color would also look amazing on the exterior of an E30...but should look amazing with your upholstery.

Yes, some big check marks happening. I will say, I am ready to drive it again!

A lot in my plate this go, I’m sure the todo list will start to come to reality. Lots of work lately, hard to make progress.

Easy to dream, hard to do, yawn… zzz

I did find out the block needed line honed.. enough there to keep the main bearings I got.

I still need to go through the head and see what lash caps I need.

Strut towers tops are about 50% reinforced. I kept thinking of just making new top… but a reminder this is for testing. Figure out where I am with handling and 7.5 castor.

New tops will go in pre cage when I’m happy with placement.

I am Playing with colors once again as the floor paint didn’t come out as I planned. And now it looks like we will have an addition of a bolt roll bar. I’ve been on tracks with the last few years fully prepped.. so seemed like a responsible idea till the welded in cage becomes reality.

Special mixed color, will see if I can get the shop to sell the paint. Note, this is for the interior. Roll bar / floor.
