I bet if you called Mahle they'd have that 2.9l piston data on file.
I have one of the 2.7s you mentioned in hoopty now with stock bore/ i pistons, shaved deck, eta crank/rods, 272 cam. It feels great in the car, isn't exactly a power house. I bet it'd make more power with a fresh bore and 84.5mm pistons (11251714810).
No one makes a good off the shelf piston for use with s52 crank so you have to get a custom set. Isn't the end of the world, top end performance does them often, but then you're spending $1500 on a set of pistons.
I still think the best bang for the buck is the 2.7 with the 84.5mm pistons, and spend some coin on headwork/ITBs/header.
This my current 2.7 272 cam vs stock bottom end m20b25 with a 272 cam. Same peak power, 2.7 has the torques
