Yes and i downgraded back to win7 the same day. (I say downgraded because windows 10 is newer.)

Win10 is "free" for the same reason gmail and youtube are free. Your data. Windows 10 is a giant spiderweb thats designed to catch as much data as possible. Google has been doing it for ages and makes a fortune

Win10 is not free if you ever make hardware changes. It's a one time upgrade.

Most of the features of windows 10 are useless to me. I'm never going to use cortana, or windows live tiles, or mail or backup or any of that shit. Honestly at first glance it's just a reskinned windows 8.

It still doesn't come with microsoft office. When are they gonna learn? Who the hell still buys it when you can get OpenOffice, literally the exact same shit, for free? Why not just include it with the OS? Everyone and their dog is going to be doing some sort of word processing, and they sure as hell aren't using notepad.exe

It still doesn't come with proper antivirus. Windows defender is a joke and any virus or spyware can disable it. It's 2015 and cyber security is a huge deal, and they still expect people to get their own antivirus, which presumably most users (sheep) won't do.

Honestly they're just giving me more reasons to keep using my mac. Yes, I dislike apple for overcharging for the hardware you get, but it works out of the box. Windows still doesn't.

Also "Edge" is just a reskinned internet exploder. It's still the same shitty, slow, browser underneath. I compared loading webpages side by side and chrome was 2 to 3 times faster loading pretty much any page.

I also found that windows 10 used more background resources than 7, despite what I read. I'm not sure if that had to with some sort of background updating. Presumably it's the same reason google chrome uses so much memory, anything and everything is recorded and analyzed in order to build a profile on you as a user for targeted advertising.

So for me, I'm gonna stick with windows 7. I think of windows 10 like a pimp my ride honda civic special. It might look sweet and expensive to most people, but for a power user it's still a god awful honda civic underneath.

I agree with the data mining part, but youre not exactly right on half your paragraph.

        Apple fan boy!^^

im not going to go to windows 10 until more programs and such support it. i play alot of games and use a lot of programs that were used when i even had XP and its gonna throw off my whole set-up if i cant use most of them just to have a new OS.

on the microsoft office shpeal, just torrent it like the rest of the world.

Most of the world doesn't even know what a torrent is. Obviously it's no big hassle to pirate it or download the open office equivalent. But it annoys me that they don't just include it. Besides, if they're reading your emails, they may as well read your word docs and excel sheets as well.

Also feel free to point out any factual errors I made. I'm simply stating my opinion and my experience. A few hours was enough to convince me to say fuck this and revert the update

I'm by no means an apple fan boy. I actually don't like the company. But there's a reason people (professionals) prefer MacBooks to laptops. In the desktop world there's no contest, Mac pros are useless.

panda you hit on a lot of things that are also my opinion as far as extreme dislike of operating systems and programs using your information. I have a vm somewhere of 10 running, but I don't have any plans to upgrade my machines.

Things are too bloated in all aspects of software these days, hell even Apple's next release will basically be the same. They are probably just as bad at gathering your information. Probably worse if you count iphones. I'm a privacy advocate, but if you really want to be serious about it you and I both know you have to almost run a rudimentary version of Linux that won't likely run the programs that you need.

In other computer news, I'm looking to upgrade monitors on the home office PC when I can justify the means. Thinking one or two extreme wides stacked on an adjustable arm.

The "Apple does it too" argument is all over the internet since the release of W10. Its total crap.

While Apple does collect data, they do it to
              1) Get feedback for future updates
              2) Make a seamless experience with multiple devices, thus getting you to buy other devices
              3) Allow you to easily turn everything off
              4) Get your position if you want goods/services close by
... then there's apps that may have other terms of use, but they go through a rigorous authorization process by Apple.
Apple never shoves ads in your face.

The major difference between OSX/iOS and Android/Google and now Windows is that they collect data about you to be able to resell YOU as a target for advertising. Ever notice how you're looking for something and the ads are VERY relevant? And only in your area? And in your Facebook ads? There is no reason to advertise diapers to 30 year old men on a car site. They need to show the advertisement to new moms. And it is very easy to pinpoint who is a new mom, since most of them gladly give away their personal info.
Being able to pinpoint exact customers is Adsense's and Facebook's greatest feature, making basically all other types of advertising second-rate.

I'm not familiar with Android, but you can root it and get an app that shows you all the hidden data going in and out. You will freak out. There's tons of crap being sent that you may have no idea about.
Download Ghostery, now. Available on most OS's for PC and mobile. You will see/block all the shit websites partner with to get your data.
Download Adblock+ and get rid of all that shit popping up everywhere. Allow only sites you support (otherwise you'll be invisible to their analytics and ad income).
Get a descent network monitor (LittleSnitch) or firewall that tells you when somethings trying to communicate to servers you have no idea about or trying to run processes on your device. Set it to manual mode. At first windows will keep popping up asking whether or not you want to communicate with the server, but your decision is remembered and the popups are fewer and fewer.

Tldr; Apple wants some of your data to sell you their shit. Their market is devices and apps.
Google, MS, FB need as much data as possible to be able to sell you any shit you can think of. They are advertisement whores.

I'm sure they all do it to some extent. Big data is where the money is. If you can report on the buying and browsing habits of a billion people, that's worth a lot of fuckin money.

Also +1 for the ghostery plugin. Basically every webpage you visit will have the Google Analytics plugin running in the background. Ghostery blocks that stuff.

Yes, but what people are not comprehending is that Apple does it to sell their stuff.
Its the same as if you buy a new BMW and get flyers or email about their new products or shampoos and stuff they can sell you. Mandatory service intervals gather data about the state of the car and what may be failing on that model often, so they can fix it in a facelift or update replacement parts.

Google, FB, Win and others are like if you bought a new BMW with a Google G54B35 pentaturbo and from that day, every day you kept getting flyers from PepBoys, TireRack, your local carwash, you local diner, because they know your age, gender, hobbies, where you live and they know you have enough income to buy a BMW. Ideally all that crap would show up on your dash display.
Google would get a cut of all the sales of those companies because you agreed to a free engine and their terms and they sold all your info to advertisers.

It basically comes down to corporate ethics and what personal info you're willing to give away to have various conveniences.
Some people are OK with receiving direct advertisement and consider it a convenience.

Yes, they all do, including almost all internet connections. It goes to those three letter agencies, big data is one thing, privacy from the former is another thing all together. I'm no conspiracy theorist I simply try to stay informed.

I've used Ghostery, I didn't realize it blocks Google analytics, for internet marketing people like myself that's a rather helpful tool, you can't have your cake and eat it too I suppose.

Yeah apple has a good customer base and they actually give a shit about them. Most apple customers are returning customers. I don't want to make this another apple vs Microsoft vs Google debate, that shits been beaten to death.
I went to an Apple Store with a dead iphone 4 and they basically replaced it with a brand new "refurbished" (probably a return) one at no cost. I did hint that I would probably buy a Samsung if they couldn't help me.
I just don't like that they charge $200 for some inferior headphones that cost them $20 to manufacture. They really milk the brand name, which is my main dislike.

On the other hand I think windows 7 is amazing and I've never had an issue with it period. It just works, kind of like OSX. I'm not hating on windows 10, I just don't see any compelling reason to upgrade, free or not.

100% False. If you do hardware upgrades, you can reinstall 7, and upgrade again, for the next year. If you do not change the motherboard and processor, upgrade and change about all you like. It's no different than any other windows install

Alternatively, if you do want to change the motherboard and processor, using the sysprep command will still make the windows install hardware agnostic and remove all hardware identifiers.

That is done by running an elevated (administrator) command prompt and typing in.

                          CD C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep
                          sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown

Then upgrade. This is retained because it is a very popular way to ghost an installation for hundreds of machines, very quickly. Keeps all your programs, installations, data, everything.

What about DX12 if you game? Not offered in 7 or 8. It's a a metric shitload more streamlined and smooth for gaming, much more draw calls, much higher throughput, and cleaner code. Less overhead overall. Virtual desktop, and the actual start menu? Full bitlocker drive encryption? (Pro allows local account encryption) There are more you'll probably use soon enough.

At first glance it appears you aren't digging into the operating system. All you're looking at is the skin, so that's all you'll see.

This is nitpicky at best. Yes, they still offer office as a separate product, always have and always will. Only now it's a subscription (Something I myself despise. I like to own my software). Open office is great, don't get me wrong. But in a business environment that revolves around compatibility, you can't use it. Plus it's a fantastic write off for tax purposes in a large business. It'll never be incorporated in, it makes them money. There is nothing wrong with this, some people don't like it, but there is still nothing wrong with a business needing to make money.

Microsoft themselves say getting another antivirus is a good idea because it is. Defender never was intended to be a complete solution, just a basic one so that you can install an AV safely. I have yet to run into a single person who hasn't installed one, and free ones rank alongside the best paid ones.

Would you, as a company CEO, devote the time and resources necessary to also incorporate an antivirus software team and package, with the market already so full of fantastic ones that do it as their main offering? Don't think so.

You really should have an anti-virus on OSX too, Apple recommends it... (And they recommend ESET)

You need to do three things.
                          3...

                          Install windows.
                          Install drivers
Use IE/Edge to install chrome and/or antivirus malware.

Then you can go to town with the install and enjoy your life.

It's really not much different than OSX. You still need to install some drivers. (Albeit, not internal ones because those are a small list of "Apple Approved")

No... No no no no no no. Edge is COMPLETELY different. It shares the coding from the rendering engine Trident, and Chakra for javascript from IE11, but that's it. Gone are the days of IE scripting requirements. Security holes are closed. W3C standards are now supported while still retaining JSON, and web developers no longer need to write code specifically for it. However, it does not support much of anything, for now. It's an extremely slimmed down web browser that does not have any specific web development requirements.

Use another browser though. This one is still in it's infancy. It has a lot of slick features, but I feel them to be gimmicky.

Chrome uses so much memory because each tab is its own process. That way, if one thing breaks, such as Java or flash, it doesn't take down the whole ship with it. It's a "productivity" redundancy, so you don't lose everything. The ram usage has absolutely nothing to do with data collection.

Although that is a very real concern on windows 10. Nothing you can't very easily turn off.

Now. To those who asked about it. I've been testing it on my laptop for a little bit now, leaving the bigrig on 7.

If you're on 7. Wait until everything crops up. Just like pandaboo stated, there is no real need to upgrade just now. Just not for the reasons he/she/hir stated.
If you're on 8 or 8.1. For the love of god upgrade. Turn off the data collection (Hopefully you did the same in 8), and enjoy not having the live tile start screen. If you're really concerned about data feedback, leave cortana off, although there's no justifiable cause for concern with that at this moment

Yeah. The screen is unmatched. But that's basically where it ends. It's a very real use for many graphic design professionals, and one that is simply ignored by other manufacturers. Other than that though, same (typically older generation) stuff.

Installing 7 and then 10 again is a workaround at best, for a year. Chances are Windows 10 users will be around for quite a bit longer, so my statement stills stands.

My GPU doesn't support DX12. Still gaming on DX9.

Also people don't buy Apple because of hardware or a better screen. If you care about hardware specs obviously you'll go elsewhere. You're buying it because OSX.

Again, apart from it the clear privacy issues that come with it, there isn't much reason to upgrade for anyone, you still have the same problems as the OS's before it. Still doesn't work out of the box. It's not a big deal to me but I'm thinking in terms of the mast majority of users who call "their friend who knows about computers" whenever something doesn't work.

I'm probably going to upgrade my laptop to 10.

I really want a macbook pro just for the screen. My current laptop's screen is a pile of shit and I like playing with photos on the go.
